crowe Posted November 24, 2010 Posted November 24, 2010 Any one recommend somewhere in Aus where i can buy a gearbox bearing and seal kit for this box? I have spoken to a few of the big bearing merchants, they either dont have a listing for the Zed or have a listing but dont have them in stock. Surely you can still buy a kit off the shelf somewhere? Thanks Quote
Whittie Posted November 24, 2010 Posted November 24, 2010 You sure can. Head on over to your local Repco dealer and they have kits. It's a SKG kit and it's the same as the one for the FS5W71C kit, with the only difference being a smaller countershaft bearing for the 71B box. The kit comes with both a large and small countershaft bearing. If they're not in stock, they can get it in for you in reasonable time. They're about $250 if I recall correctly, but I could be way off. Or, you could just go a a FS5W71C box and be done with the weak 260z box with its small teeth and shitty synchro's.... Quote
. Posted November 24, 2010 Posted November 24, 2010 On a related note, can I get a show of hands if it is normal to have two ball bearings drop out of a gearbox when the cover is openned up? I have no idea where they came from. Any thoughts. I added it to this thread becuase it might be useful information when you do your rebuild. Quote

Whittie Posted November 24, 2010 Posted November 24, 2010 Not quite normal to have bearings come out, no. Not all of the bearings in the gearbox are sealed, several of them are just captured ball-bearings, so I'd be rebuilding that box, replacing all the bearings as you have a busted one. Quote
. Posted November 24, 2010 Posted November 24, 2010 Thanks, That box is not currently in use. I have a rebuilt one that replaced it in the car and I am now considering a rebuild on the first box (the one with the loose ball bearing). It sounds like I now know the source of the whine that convinced me to pull the box out. Quote

Hmmmm :-\ maybe a collaspsed bearing but for the ball bearings to be floating around it must have let go in a big way. Was it noisey? It's a long shot but they could have also been the ball bearings from the detent plugs on the selector rods.... Quote

crowe Posted November 25, 2010 Author Posted November 25, 2010 Just spoke with the very knowledgable Stewart from SWM, he has the indivdual bearings and seals that i require, he mentioned that the whole kit is not really necessary as it has bits and pices that you really dont need to replace, better to buy the indivdual components on what you are trying to replace which makes sense. I have the box apart now and alot of fine metal inside, kinda like a sludge..................now just have to find where it has come from as the bearings i have checked sofar are quite good Quote

But I did not continue driving it. Maybe I caught it at the right time. The gears all look ok with the exception of reverse which has some chipped teeth. (Sorry again for highjacking the thread) Quote
Gordon Dobie Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 Galderdi Have you removed the selector shafts? If so the loose balls will be the detent balls which engage in the grooves in the selector rods. When reassembling the box these balls and their accompanying springs should be fitted after removing the 3 screw-in plugs in the sandwich plate. If the balls are not fitted it will be possible to engage two gears at the same time and either tearing the centre out of the clutch or blowing up the gearbox. Cheers Gordon Dobie Quote
