After having my diff pulled down, checked and put back together, which was found to have very minimal wear after 10 years of obuse.I put my stub axles back in and the passenenger side seems to not clip in as far as drivers side.Went for a drive and under d-accaleration the diff is vibratiing, almost grinding and my mechanic said the diff guy has made a booboo, bigtime after the noise he heard. What may be the reason for this????I must say, diff guy has come to the party and will fix.Any ideas.I will post result after I find out, just cant wait and would like other opinions. It is a pain pulling the diff out on a concrete floor after youve taken care to put it back in.

Im pretty sure they did,but I honestly thought they were the same length.Anyway will have the diff out tomorrow and on the way to the diff repairer, but will check the stubs. Thanks

Thanks guys you were right, just pulled them out, checked lengths, switched them over and they popped straight in all the way. Could this  be the cause for the noise in the diff when pulling off the throttle.Anyhow I think ill put it back together and see how I go before I pull the diff out even though its nearly out.Any info would be appreciated.

When you pulled them out did one of the spline on an axle have any damage? As in, if it was only just sitting in the diff a couple of mill (not clicked in), the diff center may have stripped the teeth, or the spline on the stub axle??

I put stub axles back in the right way this time.Took the car for a drive same noise when taking foot off the accelerator ,the diff is whinining. But due to putting a new auto in wanted to give it a squirt as under load no noise.Woke the neighbourhood up a bit frying the tyres in every gear, the auto works a beauty, even at 60ks floor it and it  it lights the treads. Was nearly gonna sell it last week but that put a smile on my face!

Wow it must make some power to smoke am at 60.

What engine and box do you have?

I just read that you had the diff center out, your noise sound like a meshing problem, not an axle problem.

You've either put the center bearings back in opposite or somehow messed up the meshing of the crown wheel and pinion.

rbx30 its got a 393 stroker windsor,c10 auto and 3.7 r200 lsd, noisy at the moment.Engine made 480hp,495flt pound there abouts.Very driveable until you floor it.With 225 hancooks its heaps of fun.Put a 255 semi slick and theres traction. As I have rebushed the rear as well just trying to make sure nothing is rubbing before I pull out the diff, but what youve said makes sense.  I didnt touch the diff a guy recommended on this site did.Either way it can be fixed. Also in neatral it makes the noise, but not under power.Looks like a busy weekend under the car again!!!!!!!!!

I got the diff out on saturday and took it to the repairer. The whining noise ended up being a slight mistake by him and is all fixed now ready to be picked up.It ended up being the amount of preload set,not being enough which was fine under power, but while rolling allowed the pinion gear to float thus creating the whine[or something like that, the explanation did go a bit over my head].Should have it back in the car in the next few days.

Good to hear its sorted.

So your pushing a bit of power through an R200, have you ever experienced any axle tramp??

I gave mine car 'some' today rolling on in second and it seemed to tramp hard, but when I grabbed third it sat flat as a tack??

Weird.

Has anyone experienced any axle tramp?

As my car is an auto cant say I have ever suffered from axle tramp even with street race tyres.Shocks at the rear are set at 50 50 with king springs and the car seems to sqat in the rear if anything.May be the road surface changed a little when you were changing gears, causing axle tramp.Even with standard suspension cant say Ive ever suffered from it,although have broken a few standard halfshafts, but since putting cvs so far so good touch wood!

I see you have a 393 stroker and over 400HP well then to quote a post on different forum

Once you go over about 300 hp in a rear wheel drive car, even if it has IRS, you will begin to see the sort of axle tramp that is due to the torsional compliance of the driveline. This has the ability to wreck engine mounts and other things, if you keep doing it.

So the question is what can you do to fix the axle tramp?? I have read that a larger front swap bar can help as this will aid in keeping the front flatter. But then if the zed shell is very stock then you will eventually (sooner rather than later) tear the swap bar mounts/split the chassis rails were it mounts.

So my questions would be this.

1. Does the car have a cage?

2. If the answer to number 1 is yes then, does this cage tie the front suspension/strut tops to the rest of cage? And this cage should pickup the tops of the rear struts too.

3. What chassis rigidity/strengthening has been carried out?

4. Have to tied the stock front chassis rails to the rear stock chassis subframe?

I ask these question based on the statement of putting down over 400HP in shell/unibody designed for much less. Also with 225 tyres you need a lot more rubber for that much power :( I would say 245 in the rear would be a good start but if running 15" you are very limited to period rubber like the TB5/TB15 if you want wider than 235/50 - yes you can get wider 15" but not in a profile that suits the zed :( ie drag rubber MT etc

EDIT: My bad you did not get axle tramp but RB30X did...so my questions should be towards RB30X setup not yours  :-[ but given Tim's is also a V8 aka torque monster = twist will be applied to the chassis with a boot full and thus making one side lighter and thus causing the axle tramp yada yada yada.

I run 225 hancooks 16inch on the street.255 M and H race master 26 inch high at the drags,no cage no chasis strengthening,no problems,so far.Car has done over 300 passes,200+ passes with old 302 boss 420hp and latest engine, but then again havent realy done much circuit stuff accept flying around sandown a few times and also calder park.I think craig aka 620z who I met once is making more power than me has done all the things you have listed and it would probably go round a circuit track like a gocart, but you would have to ask him???????Ive got mates with some serious hp cars,800hp,900hp etc so around them the only reason people spin out is because its a zed,not a toranna ,monaro or capri etc Im just trying to have fun and my ten year old daughter loves it!Although a turbo hangin off the v8 would be crazy.
