mikedoeslife Posted May 20, 2007 Author Posted May 20, 2007 Haha, if I wasn't in a relationship, I'd move up there in a flash! Pardon the pun Yeah man, post up some of your work!! Quote
Toecutter Posted May 20, 2007 Posted May 20, 2007 Just finished checking your blog, very interesting mate. Some really cool drawings in there. I've burnt a CD ROM full of various pics from all over the place including all sorts of odd angles on the Z you could work with both in and out. You should get it Tuesdayish in the mail. This might sound a bit silly but just a thought for more reference material you could use...I've got sucked in to watching alot of You Tube Top Gear Vids of late and one of the things I really like about that show is the way they shoot the cars in terms of cinamatography. I thought screen prints of some of the more interesting shots with Z subtitutes might help out at times. Anyhow might not be helpful to you but just a thought. Quote
mikedoeslife Posted May 20, 2007 Author Posted May 20, 2007 Hmm that's not a bad idea at all actually, I'll have to have a think about that one! And thank you for sending the disc of photos too! That'll be very frickin' handy, for sure!! Quote
mikedoeslife Posted June 8, 2007 Author Posted June 8, 2007 Updated the first post with a new progress sketch http://www.viczcar.com/forum/index.php/topic,897.msg5747.html#msg5747 Quote
zedevan Posted June 8, 2007 Posted June 8, 2007 looks good! i've got quite a few copic markers as i use them for uni stuff, sure aren't cheap huh? speically when everyone borrows each others, you end up loosing to many...i've prob lost 10 but gained 4 lol i've got a tablet but was to small (bought it prob 5yrs ago so couldn't afford much ) but ended up just drawing stuff then tracing in illustrator then using selections and layers, but then again i was never doing it as much as you do or as sexily as u do! we use some program at work with the screen tablets, its basically photoshop but simplified down to only layers and better paint brush options, i'll pay attention to what its called but u mgiht have already seen/used it. i was hoping that image was higher res to see a name, i think the person futher away is using it. does anyone see the problem with the photo? hehe, i pointed it out to them but they coudlnt' b bothered fixing it after. mikedoeslife Posted June 8, 2007 Author Posted June 8, 2007 Holy shit, are those Wacom Cintiqs?! I want one ;_; So expensive! What's wrong in the pic? I must be missing it hahah. Yeah, any decent marker and technical pen is damn expensive, that's why I'm trying to focus 100% on digital work now, haha. My stylus is starting to wear out! Gotta order some new nibs for it, hehe. mikedoeslife Posted June 8, 2007 Author Posted June 8, 2007 Thought you folks might like to see a glimpse of how I do things, so I'll (very vaguely) walk you through the steps to drawing a person inside the Z! 1) Sketch it out, usually in light blue. You can use any colour obviously, but I'm just used to using blue haha. You can see it's quite a messy sketch, its purpose is to give me an idea of the shape and pose I'll be using. 2) Now that I've got the shape and pose down, I can start to figure out details. Switch to red, and use the blue lines as a guide. I've turned off the blue lines in this shot, so that you can see the red lines more easily. 3) Throw in the final inks. Basically identical to the red lines, but a little more polished, neater, sharper. And, uh, black. 4) erase the various parts of the car that the person's body crosses over, so the person fits the scene properly! Voila, done Quote
Toecutter Posted June 8, 2007 Posted June 8, 2007 Looks great mate. We'll get something going on the front page soon regarding ENDLESS SPIRIT FINAL EVOLUTION Z! The plan is to give you admin rights to chop and change that section as you please. Quote
mikedoeslife Posted June 8, 2007 Author Posted June 8, 2007 That'd be awesome. Hopefully it can maintain a decent system for presenting the comic and the comic archives (i.e. previous pages and navigation between the pages), otherwise I might not be too keen on the arrangement. But we'll see how it goes. Quote
zedevan Posted June 12, 2007 Posted June 12, 2007 yep, the dam expensive screens, i was shocked when a second one showed up! the thing wrong in the pic is the closer screen is "drawing" whats hanging up in the background, which to me atleast is a stuff up lol. the program that is prefered for using it is by alias, i've forgotten the exact name, something like sketchpad? Quote
mikedoeslife Posted June 12, 2007 Author Posted June 12, 2007 Aaah I see it now, haha. Hmm, never heard of that app or that company! Quote
zedevan Posted June 13, 2007 Posted June 13, 2007 i believe most cars are modeled in alias, like the main app of it, i've never played with it though, tis ment to b really good though. i think its made by autodesk who make autocad and inventor, and i think that sketchpad one is free? Quote
zr240 Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007 hi Van loving the zed artwork your doing. how long does it take to get to the stage of the pic you did of Sulios car? Would love to get a comic style shot of my old race car. Ash Quote
mikedoeslife Posted June 15, 2007 Author Posted June 15, 2007 Zedevan: Hmm, might have to check that Alias app out! zr240: Haha, a long time. I usually only use that much detail for certain shots, depending on their importance to the story and the size of the page, etc. Right now I'm doing a drawing of the bad guy in the comic leaning against his R34 GT-R Z-Tune, and it's taking aaaages. But it's all worth it in the end! Quote
mikedoeslife Posted June 15, 2007 Author Posted June 15, 2007 The bad guy, Derrick, leaning against his R34 GT-R Z-Tune. Colours will come in the next stage! And here's a progress sketch from earlier. I did use photo reference for the car! Quote
mikedoeslife Posted June 15, 2007 Author Posted June 15, 2007 Thanks man! Hehe yeah, I try to get in a few games each week. Studying full time makes it difficult to afford such luxuries, haha. But it's the only way I get to drive an S30Z ;_; Quote
Toecutter Posted July 26, 2007 Posted July 26, 2007 Hey a little off the topic but down the path of animation. Van do you think this little clip was "drawn" frame by frame? Reminds me of the film Waking Life a few years back. I think they call it rotoscoping from memory. Quote
mikedoeslife Posted July 26, 2007 Author Posted July 26, 2007 It's not technically rotoscoping, but it's a primitive form of the same concept. By the looks of it, they've basically just sketched over each frame - similar process to rotoscoping, but far less detailed. Pretty cool! Quote
Mr Camouflage Posted July 26, 2007 Posted July 26, 2007 It's not technically rotoscoping, but it's a primitive form of the same concept. By the looks of it, they've basically just sketched over each frame - similar process to rotoscoping, but far less detailed. Pretty cool! Looks like a real video thats they ran through some video effects software. It's like that old A-ha video (Just saw an episode of Family guy that ripped off that video too). Hey Van, have you ever thought about taking your drawings and making an animation? I think it would look great as a 2d style animation. Maybe an animated comic book in flash or something. That way you could have movement and sound effects. Just a thought... Quote
mikedoeslife Posted July 26, 2007 Author Posted July 26, 2007 Haha, thought about it dozens of times, but I don't have the time or commitment for that sort of thing unfortunately! Quote
HELLFIRE! Posted December 3, 2007 Posted December 3, 2007 love your work Van. As for plate names, I like LILITH. I like this because it is the mythological name of the first woman who defied subjegation. The mythology is better explained here...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lilith Quote
Charlie Boy Posted December 4, 2007 Posted December 4, 2007 Can't believe I've missed this post for so long, Uber cool stuff Van!!! We've got about 20 of those screens at work there pretty cool but no good for what I do as I would get a stiff neck looking down on one of those for 10 hours a day. Fingers crossed I'll be getting a 30inch flat screen in the next week, shame I'll only be able to use it for a few days as I moving to Holden next year C Quote
