Sound proofing

I'm thinking about using some sound proofing material such as the stuff they sell at jaycar under my carpet/trans tunnel but not keen about using adhesive. Will it still be effective if I just fix it with some 2 sided? cheers

Might work better with the added airgap in between the metal and the soundproofing...

Cool, i'll give it  a go then. wasn't sure about the airgap thing. I thought the airgap might result in it being ineffective. The jaycar stuff is cheap anyway compared to dynamat.

I think that much of the effect of mat sound-proofing is that it stops the panel from 'drumming' or vibrating.  I believe that this is achieved by sticking to the panel.  As long as the panel is prevented from flexing, even a tiny 1mm movement will cause noise - (just look at how much noise you can get from a small speaker that will only oscolate a couple of mm?) - then you should be OK.

 

Why aren't you keen to use adhesive?  Are you planning on lifting it often?  Personally, I would glue it down.

Not confident of my handyman skills-scared to screw it up.

It's sound proofing!  It goes behind dash, under carpets and other trim?  If you make a mistake or it folds on you, cut that section out and put in another section.  Just take your time, work methodically - you'll be fine.

 

Once you've done the floors and firewall, use of cuts to do the inside of the doors!  It will cut down a lot of drumming.

 

Don't forget, though, it will reduce the sound of your webers and straight through exhaust!!

Lol  the glue being irreversible  is what I'm afraid of screwing up. But I get what you're saying, once it's in why would you want it out

Even glue can be cleaned off.

 

Sound deadening to be effective should be attached, I.E. glued to the metal you want to deaden.

I bought the jaycar stuff and a spray adhesive. Now just have to find the roller like the fibre-glasser uses.
