BobsYourUncle Posted July 30, 2010 Posted July 30, 2010 I'm trying do figure out the best place to put axle stands at rear of my 2+2 - would the round bars in the transverse link that run parallel to the road be suitable? They look pretty sturdy... what other options are there? Quote
Whittie Posted July 30, 2010 Posted July 30, 2010 I'd advise against rear sway bar. I've done that twice now and while stable have managed both times to bend the mount and push the stabiliser bar into the diff. The noise it makes stopped me half way out the drive way enroute to a race day and caused me to miss the event Be warned if you hear really bad rear-end noise after jacking car from said location Quote
Scoota G Posted July 30, 2010 Posted July 30, 2010 Um me was going to say from the rear sway bar mounts. Quote
Whittie Posted July 30, 2010 Posted July 30, 2010 I dunno what the mount is like on your car, but on mine it's just a thing bit of sheet steel wrapped in a circle, so not such a good spot. I've mounted on the suspension arm succesfully. I put the stand all the way back on the 'rod' that goes between the mounts on the inboard sides. Careful not to take paint off tho cause the stand could be on an angle. Not ideal but I honestly can't think of anywhere else to mount a rear stand!! **EDIT** Just to clarify, it doesn't damage the sway bar or diff just the vibration from the diff turns into a really horrible vibration noise as the stabiliser bars rattle against the diff and transmits the noise to the cabin. Six_Shooter Posted July 30, 2010 Posted July 30, 2010 What type of work is being performed? If the rear suspension is not going to be touched, you can use the LCAs. If the rear suspension is going to be worked on, you could use the box that is in front of the wheels well, where I believe a sway would have mounted. My car didn't come with a sway bar. I have used this location a few times now, sometimes for months at a time. Quote
BobsYourUncle Posted July 31, 2010 Author Posted July 31, 2010 I'm doing a gearbox swap, so the rear suspension won't be touched. I have a rear sway bar. Quote
Thomo260 Posted July 31, 2010 Posted July 31, 2010 I just used the rails. Note the one on the right is slightly higher as it's further back. Just make sure the front wheels are well chocked. Quote

Your is a 2+2 which like the later 260z 2 seater have larger/stronger chassis rails - I would recommend you not use those locations on a 240z or early 260z unless you want to bend them. I use the rear subframe - near the swap bar mounts but I don't have a rear swap bar fitted (and all my zed I have owned if they did have one fitted it was removed) so an axles stand fits in there nicely.
