1600dave Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 Firstly, are they the same length as the 71B boxes ? Does the shifter come up through the floor in the same position ? Can they be converted to the later "slip" type rear connection (ie not the flange-type) ? Quote
C.A.R. Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 Firstly, are they the same length as the 71B boxes ? Near enough to the same length Dave, but... Does the shifter come up through the floor in the same position ? No, it sits further BACK by about 30mm or so compared to a 'B' box. Can they be converted to the later "slip" type rear connection (ie not the flange-type) ? I believe they can, but it's not easy & you might as well go for a 'B' box if you don't want to deal with the output flange. I'm sure 'Willy Wonker' could elaborate more. The 'A' ratio's are nice though... Quote
PZG302 Posted May 1, 2010 Posted May 1, 2010 They can be converted to the later slip type connection, mine has been. I use the later 260 rear extension to utilise the slip joint output, it does make life easier. Not sure on what's involved though but it isn't too hard as I believe the boys in the shop knocked the conversion over in pretty quick time. I was spoilt by having a pretty good Z workshop look after me when I was racing in the NSW state championship pretty seriously. Quote

The 'A' ratio's are nice though... Fair enough. I was looking at a 71A box on eBay, might wait till a 71B box comes up. Since Bathurst I've been looking at replacing the 180B SSS box in my 1600 with a box that has a "proper" shift pattern instead of the dogleg one in it now. I'm getting sick of dropping it in the wrong gear in the heat of the moment. Saw Mr Wonka today at the HSRCA meeting at Eastern Creek - he was on the track in the 2000 Sports, I was a flag marshal. Saw one rather dead zed as well after a meeting with a concrete wall :'( Thanks everyone for the info. Quote
dat2kman Posted May 6, 2010 Posted May 6, 2010 pzg302, dunno how Dave Pardey managed to fit a later B typpe 260 ext housing ( two piece box) to a B type 3 piece, unless some serous welding, and some even more serious alignment was done, and we both know DP isnt that good a welder!! 1600Dave, I have looked at the flange back end, and see no reason why you cannot run a slip yoke. The flange was done for Datsuns (early) so they could run a real complicated slip joint in the tailshaft on the live axle cars, The Dato 2000's run these, and the Fury 120Y runs one as well, it has a two piece tailshaft, with a short fixed first part to a bearing in a carrier that bolts to the fllor, then goes to a longer two pice slip joint shaft to the H190 5 link rear, odd and complicated, but it worked, biggest issue I suppose was ground clearance and not damaging a long one pice tailshaft with rocks etc. Factory 240RS had same setup, so i suppose it was copied whenthey built the Y The 71A box DOES have the nice ratios but, ( same as early 260Z B type box) Consider it, otherwise, a close ratio gearset from Kameari Japan will help heaps, inside a stock B box Yep had a bit of fun at EC on May1/2, in 20 Lap Group Sa/Sb enduro, I got into the lead, but went silly around Corporate hill and ran real wide, went rallycrossing!, recovered to finish third. The Sunday stuff was fun, scored a 5th and a 4th in the group Sc races ( 6 lap and a 15 lap). Brian Potts's Z does not look too good at all, very heavy front then drivers side hit, it'll buff out though! next time must catch up! You gonna come to Bathurst in 2011? Quote

Looking at the time of reply, my bad :oThough I do have a slip yoke on my box and am running what is considered the better 240 ratios. Quote
1600dave Posted May 6, 2010 Author Posted May 6, 2010 Thanks for the info - I'll probably just keep an eye out for a 71B "Z" box. Kameari gearset would be nice, probably out of my budget at the moment :-\ I went down to EC last Saturday, I had two signatures on my trainee officials licence from Bathurst so I thought I'd get the third signature needed fo a general officials licence - Norman Wise suggested the HSRCA meeting as one I'd enjoy (which I did). Spent the day on the turn 4 / rear pit gate flag point. Good to see quite a few fairlady's out on the track, enjoyed watching you come up thu the field in the 20 lapper (till you forgot to slow down after passing the Morgan for the lead..) Loved the sound of the old Ferrari F1 car. Bathurst 2011, I'm hoping to be there. Depends on a few things - the 2011 Datsun nationals and whether my eldest daughter goes on a school excursion to Malaysia that's scheduled for next Easter. If she goes, the wife will go as well ( as a helper ), leaving me to look after the youngest daughter. But I'll be trying my best to work something out, I loved it this year Quote
