zrevival Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 I have an '77 australian assembled 260z 2+2 (yes - i have kids, and they love it) and after taking the flat top carbs and standard manifold in readyness for a set of triples (thanks scoota) - i just realised that the block has no marking or individual number other than 'P30' Just making sure - is this a genuine L26 block? I understand the engine was reconditioned about 50K ago - maybe it was replaced?? Also - assuming it is an L26 block, i have a good set of flat top L24 pistons which i would like to use in the block. Can I replace the pistons 'in-situ' i.e. dropping the sump and removing the head in the car Quote
NZeder Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 Both the L24 and L26 have a P30 cast on them the only way to tell if it is a L26 if the engine number is missing is remove the head a L26 has valve recess notched into the block for exhaust valve clearances. But there should be engine number on the right rear of the block (top right rear when looking at the block from the flywheel/gearbox end) Quote
zrevival Posted April 6, 2010 Author Posted April 6, 2010 yep - your right mike, completely missed that and yes it is an L26. Was used to seeing the block number on the bottom rear left of the block. Do you know if you cam change the pistons with the block still in? I'm replacing the head anyway so i would like to do the pistons at the same time thanks for your help Quote
Scoota G Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 Hey Sunshine thanks for the mention. I changed the conrod bearings with the engine in the car so it can be done. The sump will come off no problem but the second piston is a bit of a pain to get to as the crossmember is in the way (just). The only problem is that you'll be in and out of the underneath of the car and also the torque settings could be a bit tricky. Check and make sure the pistons (both sets) are the same and neither is oversize too. Quote
