Clutch Slave Cylinder - Interchangeable with gearbox conversions?

Recommended Posts

I'm looking to replace my clutch slave cylinder...

Firstly are the slave cylinders interchangeable between 240z, 260z and 280zx? I assumed they were and a lot of ebay listings list 1 slave for the 240z, 260z and 280z (not zx). As a side note, black dragon lists a different slave rebuild kit for 70-72, 73-75, 75-83 and 81-83 (turbo).

Secondly, if the answer to the above question is no, I would assume that a 240z with a 280zx box has a 280zx slave cylinder? (My 240z came with a 280zx box)

Thirdly, if I have since converted to a s14 5 speed gearbox and kept the slave cylinder that was on the car, what should I replace it with?

Well I know when I was at the track with my old 240z - I lost the clutch slave cylinder (old and leaked before I even raced - the drive to the track killed it) anyway the local REPCO did not have any stock for a 240z/260z/280zx so I just asked for a Skyline unit (which they had) I was told by the PFY (for those that need to know PFY = Pimple Faced Youth) it would not work as it was for a Skyline not a Datsun 240z. I told him just to sell it to me. At the track it was installed and worked perfect bolted right up and was the same size and stroke (as I knew it would be). The only use was the return spring from the clutch fork as this new cylinder did not have the location for the spring to hock into - so I used a different spring (longer) and hocked it around the bleed nipple.

Also I know the Datsun 240z slave cylinder will bolt up to the Skyline 71C box as this is the setup in my mates racecar.

Also the S13/14 uses the same clutch slave cylinder the skyline unit I installed R31/R32/R33 push type (ie RB20DE/T,RB25DE/T)

With my RB gearbox in the 240, I tried using the Skyline cylinder but it didn't have enough travel. installed the zed one, worked fine. Compared the two bores, Skyline one was larger = less travel, zed cylinder was smaller = more movement for given pedal travel.

Thanks for all the info guys!

So basically it sounds like one slave cylinder fits every car ever made haha (joke).

I shall order a JB4055 tomorrow.
