Surly_Z Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 As you guys might know, I'm about to become a Melbournite and will be looking to get the Z down there once I've found a house with a garage. So my friend Alex (from the Thredbo trip) is going to be looking after my car until I find it a house. So next question, does anyone know of a good/trustworthy car freight business in ACT? I'm not too keen to drive the epic journey, and it'll be cheaper after all the petrol she'd guzzle! Also, who's keen for a farewell beer sometime before the 24th August? Quote
sco_aus Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 Ill drive it down in December if I go to the BBQ? Car freight aint cheap. I am always up for it and since im currently unemployed, sooner rather than later is better since ill start another job soon.. Quote
Surly_Z Posted August 10, 2009 Author Posted August 10, 2009 Thanks for the offer, currrently she's full of holes in the floor as Simons welding some patches for me. I also wont have garage down south for 2 months or so. I got a quote offone company for just under $400, does that sound right? Quote
sco_aus Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 Thats a lot cheaper than it used to be, pretty good really. Quote
chris240 Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 just name the time & place for brewskis. the last thing those Mexicans need is another zed ! Quote
skidmark117 Posted August 13, 2009 Posted August 13, 2009 I suppose car freight is the only option beyond 'drive it yourself' one way or another. My Zed came up from Melbourne on a car trailer. My father in law did the deed, and said it was initially quite disconcerting to check the rear vision mirror and see a Zed RIGHT behind... Would one way car and trailer hire be a cheaper option? Despite the fact it'd be 8 hours you wouldn't get back... :'( Quote
C.A.R. Posted August 13, 2009 Posted August 13, 2009 Oh yee of little faith! I drove the 10hrs from Melbourne to Goulburn for the '05 nationals, did the track day at Wakefeild, then drove the 10hrs home, all in the Zed. And I didn't have 1 problem Quote
Surly_Z Posted August 13, 2009 Author Posted August 13, 2009 Yeah if I can find a one-way trailer hire it may work... I may have to bite the bullet and do the drive. Quote
ChiprZ Posted August 13, 2009 Posted August 13, 2009 I drove over to Adelaide to pick mine up (with almost an entire second car worth of spares (doors, bonnet, engine, interior...basically everything but a shell) with a trailer from a service station. Only disconcerting thing was the adelaide hills... up hill was a struggle, but down hill was almost solidly resting on the brakes... kept getting speed wobbles. If your going to tow make sure you are aware of the terrain and have a car that can handle the weight (or maybe better yet a 4WD)...i did it in a vl commodore Quote
620Z Posted August 13, 2009 Posted August 13, 2009 Hey we drove up to Threadbo and back again. ACT isn't that far. I sense you are not confident in the cars reliability. Otherwise get Scott to drive it down to the Xmas BBQ and pay for his flight home. Job done. Plus if the car breaks down he will have to fix it. Ha Ha. :-) Quote
Surly_Z Posted August 13, 2009 Author Posted August 13, 2009 The car should make it (fingers crossed), the L28 is fairly strong and I've had no major issues yet. Burns a bit of oil, and spark plug 6 tends to gunk up after a while - so knowing a rebuild is in order, I don't want it to need one when Scott's halfway to Albury! My major worry really is that I'm in a bums rush to get her back together. Simon has been kind enough to patch some rust in the pans, so now I've got to rust convert and reseal the rest, and get her ready for 800kms of driving. I guess I'm just being an 'over-protective parent' here! I'll just have to not worry and fang it down there! Quote
chris240 Posted August 13, 2009 Posted August 13, 2009 enough jibbering Josh....whens drinks ?? Quote
sco_aus Posted August 13, 2009 Posted August 13, 2009 I'm happy to drive it down dude, i love a good adventure like that. I know the highway to Melbourne like the back of my hand (used to drive it every weekend for over a year) and I know people along the way, so its pretty safe. Gives me a good excuse to go to the BBQ too lol. So back to drinks, Saturday night. I presume you are PMing those behind the times without Facebook? Quote
chris240 Posted August 13, 2009 Posted August 13, 2009 how about next thursday (20th) say just after 5pm at the regular drinking hole ?? Quote
Surly_Z Posted August 14, 2009 Author Posted August 14, 2009 I've organised drinks at Debacle in Braddon at 8pm this Saturday, so all are invited - friends, partners, kids etc. Quote
