Hi guys,

I have a set of 17x8.5 (+4 offset) Rota rims I bought of BenZed,

but after I lower the Zed I know I'm going to run into clearance issues with these on the car.

So my question is; what's the best, most effective way to pump the rear guards out?

I was thinking along the lines of a block of wood (shaped to the inner profile of the wheelarch) & a bottle jack, then gentle heat the area with the wattage hairdryer & gently jack the guards out till I have sufficient clearance.

I'll of coarse have tyres fitted to the rims - probably 225/45/17's.

Is there any other way I could do this?

Lurch.....

Your more old school tech than I thought....perfect... ;) no need to tell you to check each radius stretch from side to side and adjust your block as you go.........

I use a block of soft pine I got from a packing crate

There are of course more modern pieces of equipment on the market that bolt onto your wheel studs etc.......if thats your thing

Thanks Jeff.

I was going to make up a cardboard template to sit just above the arch inside & out to check the stretch.

I'll have to have a think about how best to implament it though...

Those guard rollars are only good for bending the lips back/flat - not for pumping the the inside wheel well, sadly :(

One method I use is a simple jig using two x two window suckers, 2 pieces of thin alloy flat bar shaped to the contour of the guard incorporating the stretch I want, one for top and bottom

Using the same jig, but a bit more precise, space the cardboard template pieces your thinking of using every 50 or 100 mm over the length of the guard ( like ribs ) at the required reducing increments from the center working outwards to both ends EG: 50mm stretch, 40mm stretch and so on until you come back to zero, this may only be four or five pieces of cardboard each side of center, your call...

This can then be flipped to the other side of your car no problems..

Or to save the interference of the block of wood and jack you can use a good old fashioned ball bearing rolling pin and a bit of muscle once youve warmed your guard, but youll need a helper for this to apply smooth even heat over the area your stretching as you work....

strech the tyres first

I'm not a homosexual drifter, so I won't be doing that.

Tyres will be 225/45 or 50/17's.

Best way is get some wheels with the proper offset. You will want to get 255's under there one day Lurch. Trust me do it properly once. That's my 20cents worth.

I've just done mine with a roller and it worked very well, It did buckle the guards right above the middle of each arch, which would be a real pain if it wasn't being resprayed. I moved mine about 15-20mm.

I had a bit of a 'play' at pumping the rear arches/guards, but I've decided to leave it to a professional.

For anyone doing this in NSW I recommend Drift Garage 0404 081 116. Luis charges $55 a corner to do it with a proper guard roller and does a great job.
