Oversteer Posted January 26, 2024 Posted January 26, 2024 (edited) Hello I'm trying to get a 260Z licensed, one of the last things to fix is the speedo, it bounces around badly so I bought a new cable... but that made no difference ! With the dash out spinning the speedo on the bench I can see its the speedo it self, I don't think it will pass inspection like this ! Anyone had this problem before ? how do I fix? Cheers Edited January 26, 2024 by Oversteer Quote
Oversteer Posted January 27, 2024 Author Posted January 27, 2024 (edited) So I pulled the speedo out, and as soon as I had it in my hand I heard the clacking noise it makes while driving/bouncing.... Pulled it apart and is surprisingly clean in side... its the magnet drums making the noise...such tiny little bushes and pins, looks tricky to fix any play in these items ! Administrators gav240z Posted January 31, 2024 Administrators Posted January 31, 2024 Hmmm I've got the same issue with my 240z, I assumed it was the cable that gets out of round or square over time. But perhaps not, although I don't hear anything in terms of noise from mine when driving. I don't yet know how to fix it though! Quote
Oversteer Posted January 31, 2024 Author Posted January 31, 2024 In your case I would start with the cable... new cable was cheap on ebay. Quote
gvowzcar Posted March 5, 2024 Posted March 5, 2024 Ex Datsun mechanic, This was a problem from new for some datsuns, providing lubrication and cable is ok, the solution was to grind 3 to 4 mm off the speedo end of the cable. gav240z and C.A.R. 2 Quote
Oversteer Posted March 5, 2024 Author Posted March 5, 2024 Problem was solved by buying a 2nd hand speedo ! I suspect the original speedo was damaged when the previous owner fitted white facias(which requires needle removal) 2nd hand speed off EBAY for $150, fitted white facia myself and its silky smooth.
