24Ozed Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 Hi Guys, Looking at US forums and a few mentions in Aus forums it looks like the MX5 is a good option to put into the 240z. I was planning on retrimming my original seats but don't find them supportive enough and don't think they would hold up very well in a crash ! Has anyone else here put MX5 Seats in? If so whats required to fit them? What rails would you use? Do they need modifications? Any idea's / opinions and pics would be good.. Cheers Travis Quote
fufu Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 I was just thinking this the other day. Had a meet with another group of guys and a few mx5s' were there. Started giving me ideas on how similar they were to 240z seats. Quote
PZG302 Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 I wouldn't use early MX5 seats. I have an 89 NA6 MX5 and my shoulders blades are actually outside the seat. It isn't much fun when driving the way it was meant to be at the moment, well it still is but i slide around a lot. My old race seat will end up in the 5 for more support. From memory the NA and NB seats are pretty similar, not sure about the NC seats though they would be exxy as they are still fairly new. They also don't offer much support for your back or legs for a long trip. I had to drive it from Sydney to Brisbane when I bought it and it was one of the most uncomfortable, yet fun, drives I have done. Quote
chris240 Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 as far as bolt in goes its fairly straight forward and an easy conversion. Ive spoken to guys that have put mx-5 seats in and they can confirm this. comfort-wise, well thats really upto the individual. I do like them as they somewhat resemble 240z seats in shape & appearance. Quote
24Ozed Posted April 21, 2009 Author Posted April 21, 2009 Cool ! Thanks guys, if anyone find out anything more on the actual fitting of the seats please let me know. Quote
24Ozed Posted April 21, 2009 Author Posted April 21, 2009 Wow.. i googled this before but it didn't come up.. Looks pretty easy guys.. I can't get the pic because i'm not a member, but will register and check it out later tonight. Travis http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?p=11697 Quote
Sirpent Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 Hi All, Smart Arse here (I hope I'm not putting ppl off with my posts) These are the seats in my parting out Ford Probe that I installed when the factory drivers seat collapsed, they are out of a 2002 Celica that I picked up from a Toyota wrecker, I'm thinking of using these in My Z project. Nice and thin like the original Z seats, have full adjustment, plus have a side hand mechanism, and additional rear foot mechanism to allow it to fold forward so they would be good for 2 seaters or 2+2's. Just an idea of course. I paid $150.00 for them in mint condition, the side airbags built into the seats went off so they were worthless to the wrecker, I cut the bags away and re-secured the air bag trims which just pop off when they deploy. Cheers John Quote
. Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 I did buy a pair of FTO seats at one point. Started to jig up the mounts and gave up. They would have fitted nicely but the orginal rails could only be removed with half the seat frame and the original mounts are not level. Quote
Sirpent Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 Hey Galderedi............... Did you ask me the question about the ECU for the L20 on Ebay? Quote
. Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 yup thats me. I was kinda hoping it was an after market ECU. Always on the lookout for one. Hope the engine gets you the $$$ you are after. Quote
24Ozed Posted August 4, 2009 Author Posted August 4, 2009 Hi Guys, .. Just an update. Picked up a pair of prrrfect MX-5 seats out of a 90ish model. Fitted them up in a day, only minor modifications to the rails required. Very comfortable and are a good fit, excellent position, no need to modify angles etc... Have a pic on my gallery of them fitted.. Will take some more pics when i get a chance. Very happy with my new seats !!! ;D ;D Travis Quote
George Posted August 4, 2009 Posted August 4, 2009 good to hear it went well for you. i happen to find myself wanting to go back to the original seats... the ones with the 4 metal rings are hot... and light... Quote
kalium Posted August 5, 2009 Posted August 5, 2009 I did buy a pair of FTO seats at one point. Started to jig up the mounts and gave up. They would have fitted nicely but the orginal rails could only be removed with half the seat frame and the original mounts are not level. I've got FTO seats in my 260. Required some welding and bolting some tubular steel to the bottom of the seats, but it worked out OK. They aren't positioned completely right though, so maybe oneday in the future I may take em out and do some grinding and welding to adjust the position of them a bit. Quote
S30Mike Posted August 5, 2009 Posted August 5, 2009 i remember reading a guy in the US thread about putting RX7 FD3S seats in his Zed.. turned out pretty awesome but took AGES to do. Id like to put some decent bucket seats in mine. EDIT:im a novice.. that thread is below this one hahaha Quote
zedevan Posted August 5, 2009 Posted August 5, 2009 you can put fd seats in an easier way by modifying the rails they come with with a grinder, however they end up sitting fairly high. because of this i am wanting to buy stock fd rails and have the mounting points modified on the zed as i like the feeling of sitting basically on the floor so if anyone wants to swap stock fd rails for modified ones let me know Quote
garvice Posted August 5, 2009 Posted August 5, 2009 i remember reading a guy in the US thread about putting RX7 FD3S seats in his Zed.. turned out pretty awesome but took AGES to do. I'm in Australia, Brisbane actually. Yes FD seats do fit with little modification, but I seriously don't know how you would drive with them installed like that. I could barely fit my closed hand between my steering wheel and my legs. It took a while to do, but once I worked out how to do it, I reckon it could be knocked over in a weekend. Especially since I have done all the hard work for everyone. Quote
