gilltech Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 The engine hoists sold by SuperCheap are rated at 1250kg; are they any good? Is that rating sufficiently adequate for our 6 cyl motors, especially with gearbox attached? I have no idea what the motors & boxes weigh, but must be most of that. Any comment or help would be appreciated. Quote
260Coupe Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 Given that the entire car has a kerb weight of around 1100 kg, I think it should be sufficient for the engine and gearbox Quote
RBZ 260 Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 are they good or not ill let someone who has one to answear it. as for weight.... well. if its 2 seater it will be slightly over 1050kg for 240 and bit more for 260z. 2+2 weighs around 1200. so even if u lifting the whole car the hoist will be ok with it. there is a post somewhere on the forum of weght of the L series. dont think it was more than 500kg with everything on it. S30Mike Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 Hmm, i HOPE our engines dont weigh nearly a Ton and a half! Quote
gilltech Posted March 27, 2009 Author Posted March 27, 2009 Good-oh, thanks for all your help, sorry if such dumb question but just wasn't sure whether the hoist would be getting near it's design limit or not or how much margin of error there might be with the things; I wouldn't want a ram or weld failure. I also didn't realise the Z cars are quite so light. Quote

gilltech Posted March 27, 2009 Author Posted March 27, 2009 SuperCheap have got the things on special at $259 at present, so am tempted to buy rather than rent one twice over, but don't want to mistakenly buy one that might struggle; I've already made that mistake with my trolley jack! New territory for me, you see. Quote
S30Mike Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 that sounds like an alright deal i might have alook myself. And yeah its always good to ask when unsure Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted March 27, 2009 Moderators Posted March 27, 2009 I remember having a good look through the HybridZ site for this same reason trying to find out the weight of an L series and RB. From memory a L24 is about 190Kg and an RB slightly more..just over 200? Mike (Nzeder) will have a better idea. Gearbox's are about 40ish Kg's I'm sure on that becasue having just lifted one earlier this week from the truck into my garage. Quote
NZeder Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 The L6 is around 170KG and the RB around 200KG but I can't recall if this is loaded or not (it is because I am load just back from the pub ) The box of a A15 5 speed is 25KG I know this as I took one to UK with me as Luggage once so that is 25x2.2lb = 55lb and I believe the zed box is around the 70lb mark = 70/2.2 = 31KG and the RB box with the larger gears would come in a little more so I would guess around the 35KG mark does this help....now were is the beer again, the Rugby will start soon - better get my A in G. gilltech Posted March 27, 2009 Author Posted March 27, 2009 Yeah, I just didn’t want to leap in to buying something that might struggle at the upper end of its rating range (thinking of the hydraulic ram leverage like my poor little trolley jack) but the L motors & 'boxes are nowhere near as heavy as I’d have guessed; I'm truly amazed! You see the, presumably, ‘professional’ lifters advertised online & in car mags seem to be from 2000kg rating & up, 4 tonne some of them, so SuperCheap’s 1250kg model just sounded a bit light hence my dumb query. But I’m reassured – I’ll go check one out this weekend as apparently they’re on special at $259, easier to buy than rent several times over. Thanks for the advice guys; it pays to ask, this forum is great. (Should I go off-topic & ask Mike why he took a gearbox to the UK?...) Quote
NZeder Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 Well you see the 5spd dog leg 56a (I think that is model number) go for £500 and I purchased on locally in NZ for $500 then took it to the UK when I was going there on business for my friend who owns a number Datsuns (and who was a zed owner in the past) so it was way way cheaper for him than getting one locally in the UK. I hope the clears up that part of the story - in the other luggage bag was a set of 1200 ovalport twin SU for the same guy and some spare 160Jsss aka 710 rear quarter glass for another Datsun Fan in the UK. Just as well as the trip include a leg to the US that have 32Kg per item of luggage and not the normal of 32Kg total Quote
dorifticon Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 Hey, be VERY CAREFUL when buying engine hoists to work on the zed, the reason being the bonnet of the zed is so long. With my engine hoist, the supplier sold out of the "base" model and so sold me the heavy duty one for the same price. It turned out I needed it. The boom on the hoist is rated to different weights depending on how far it is extended out (ie you can only carry relatively small weights with the boom at full extension). Also you will need to be able to lift the motor relatively high. I needed to extend mine out all the way to be able to lift the L6 out of my zed. If I had the base model I don't think it would have coped. That was just with the motor, adding weight of gearbox would make it more dicey. Quote
gilltech Posted April 2, 2009 Author Posted April 2, 2009 Good advice, thanks for that, that's precisely what I am suspicious of so am still shopping around; I don't know what configuration the supposed rating applies to. My plan is to lift the basic motor (without gearbox) straight up from the side & then roll the car backwards out of the way, rather than reach in from the front. I'll drop the gearbox prior, safer that way. Thanks for your input. Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted April 2, 2009 Moderators Posted April 2, 2009 With the hoist I have, I try and get the hoist as close as possible to the cars rad support panel and use the inner most hole for the top arm when lifting the engine out. Most rams in hoists should be rated to least 2-3 tons because of the leverage of the arm where the hook is. Try and get a hoist that fits in between the front wheels of the zed so you can get in as far as possible. Quote
Zeddophile Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 Back to the original question for a sec - an L28 complete with A/C, carbies and 5 speed is quoted at 237 kilos (523 lbs). As found in this thread (which perhaps should be made sticky?) http://www.viczcar.com/forum/index.php/topic,3549.15.html My crane is 2 tonne at shortest extension, then 1500kg, then 1000kg, and finally 500kg, and has a 6 ton ram. Also has folding legs so when you aren't using it, it only takes up a fairly small area. Paid about $350 for it 4 or 5 years ago from a place in tullamarine, they're about the same price now but seem to come with a removable engine stand as well (can't see one listed without this, could try I guess.) http://www.radum.com.au/shopping/product_info.php?cPath=38_223&products_id=706 I have no idea what other cranes are available for what price, as I already have one (well, I THINK I do!), but just thought it may be of interest to some (obviously not the original poster who is a little far away!) One thing I would comment on though is that the zed had to be jacked up a bit for the legs to clear under the wishbones (but it did fit in terms of width between the tyres), may be an issue with some of the others available as well. The fact that it folds up is nice though - not that I've ever had to store it long! I think out of the 4 years I've had it, its been at my house for about 6 months! Has lifted out a couple of zed engines, 3 or 4 Rover V8s, a Saab motor, an MR2 motor, a complete TR7 motor and gearbox, a GU patrol cylinder head, 2 4ac engines out of sprinters, a 4AGE into a sprinter, and I'm told its currently got a Lexus V8 dangling off it. And I only used it for the zed engines and two of the Rover v8s! Quote
