JP Posted September 1, 2008 Posted September 1, 2008 Stupid question, but where do you buy them? Been to a few hardware stores and they have no idea what I'm talking about, will try some bolt stores soon but I am sure I have heard of guys using them for ZG flares so if you could let me know it would save me some time. Also, how many types are available commonly? I have read that there are those that self-compress while others you need a specialised tool? Thanks Quote
Zeddophile Posted September 1, 2008 Posted September 1, 2008 will try some bolt stores soon These will be the best bet, if they don't know about nutserts ask for rivnuts (same thing) Not sure about self compressing ones, the special tool is very similar to a pop rivet gun, except that you screw the rivnut onto the end of it, the use it just like a pop rivet, then unscrew the tool out of the now secure rivnut. You can also put them in with a bolt, 2 nuts and a piece of scrap strap steel, but I'd have to experiment to remember the sequence. Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted September 1, 2008 Moderators Posted September 1, 2008 If you need any, I work at a specialized rivet wholesaler and we also stock all types of nutserts (rivnuts) and have a tool here you can use. They come in zinc steel, alloy and stainless with different flange types and threads from M3 - M12. Let me know which one and I can supply them. Quote

Where is the store you work at located? My car is in my garage undrivable so i wouldnt be able to use the tool onsite, how much do they sell for? Do you know off the top of your head what size hole is required for different size nutserts? Thanks Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted September 2, 2008 Moderators Posted September 2, 2008 The shop is in Moorabbin, but I have a tool at home you can use. Let me know what size bolt you plan on using, and I can tell you all the info you need. Quote

Let me know what size bolt you plan on using, and I can tell you all the info you need. Well, actually im working the other way around by accident. I am fastening my battery box in the rear and was just going to use 4 nuts and bolts through the floorpan. I measured them up and made sure they came through the other side and were not obstructed by frame rails etc. 3 came through fine, the fourth came through right in the middle of the tyre well frame which I didnt realise curved in my path. Thats why I now need some sort of blind fastener. I have 4x 8mm holes I would like to reuse, not really keen on enlarging them but it no big deal if I have to I guess. I think I read 5mm rivnuts suit a 8mm hole... This is what happens when you have a desire to work on the car in the middle of the night... Quote
fufu Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 "coventry fasteners" might get you somewhere Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted September 2, 2008 Moderators Posted September 2, 2008 Coventry's stores around Melbourne are starting to close one by one! The Moorabbin one closed its doors about a month ago... JP, if you drilled a 7 or 9mm hole it would've been good! 8mm doesn't suit any nutserts that we have. If you go to a 9mm hole, you can use a M6 thread. The nutserts can go up to 3.2mm thickness in material too. Let me know how many you're after and also what size bolt you are going to use for your ZG flares; I can tell you what size hole to drill and which nutsert to use. Quote
