Glen Posted July 21, 2008 Posted July 21, 2008 Can anyone tell me where the headlight relay is, or if a 77 model even had a relay? Headlights stopped working, I took the headlights out and put them straight onto 12volts and they worked, i then looked at the fuse's and all was good. So im thinking either its the switch or the relay. Parkers still work. anyhelp please. Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted July 21, 2008 Moderators Posted July 21, 2008 Glen, try where the fusible links are; near the driver's side strut tower. Depending on the model, either they are under those clear plastic covers or out in the open. If you have a vented bonnet, rain gets into them and corrodes the connection. Or just the switch is rooted. Just a guess! Quote
Glen Posted July 21, 2008 Author Posted July 21, 2008 sorry forget to mention i checked the fuseable links aswell, i cant think of anything else other than the switch. thanks anyway man! Mik has a spare one i should go try it. Quote
JP Posted July 25, 2008 Posted July 25, 2008 grab the 76 280z diagram from here http://www.atlanticz.ca/zclub/techtips/electrical.htm as I have found they are most similar to the Aust. '77 260Z with two sets of fusible links (minus anything EFI). You can try the others, just my opinion on the '76. Get some highlighters and follow the wires from the headlights and work backwards, its not as daunting as it seems once you get started. Quote
chris240 Posted July 25, 2008 Posted July 25, 2008 hmmmmm I also "mysteriously" lost my headlights last week !! My parking lights worked fine however. Anyway on mine I traced the problem to where the lightswitch meets the steering wheel shroud. Remove the steering wheel shroud and look for a square relay that should have 3 wires soldered onto it, (facing down) 2 should be green with stripes (roughly look the same colour) and the 3rd should be all red. make sure these wires are making a clear soldered connection with the relay, on my 240, the solder just gave up the ghost and the red wire was just hanging about 10mm away from its contact. Hope this helps.. Quote
Scoota G Posted July 25, 2008 Posted July 25, 2008 I have a genuine 260Z service manual printed 1976 and i can see a "passing relay" in the wiring diagram. The diagram, which is a five page centrefold type deal, list The Headlights as: RH Red.White Red.Brown. and Red. LH Red.White Red.Brown. and Red.Yellow The R.W. and R.B. (the 2 commons) both join into the relay. Can you flick high beam on? If not that should be your relay which is inside right next to the fuse block and the horn relay. By the Diagram anyway. Quote
