Well been off my Ps for a bit now, had my good old reliable Sierra since my Ls. She's a fun car, especially offroad but I'm just getting a bit sick of a car that doesn't drive nicely, I want a car that's a pleasure to drive on the road. I'd describe driving Suzi as interesting at best, scary at worst. Someone once summed Sierras up pretty well, the ride of a skateboard, the aerodynamics of a fridge and the interior comforts of a tent.  ;D

So I've been thinking of getting an actual 'car', not a 4by.

The gf has been telling me to get something like a falcon or commodore...  ::) *yawn*

I want a car with some character behind it, something more unique and one with a bit of poke. Putting your foot flat to the floor to get up to 50 gets dull after awhile, although then again feeling like you're going to take off doing 100 makes it a bit more exciting.  :)

So anyway, I have my eye on either of a 240Z, 260Z, 260Z 2+2. Not really fussed or sure which I'd like to get. I'm used to not really having any practical cargo or passenger space so that's no problem, I don't expect insane performance and as I said I like the look of them, I've secretly wanted a fastback coupe for a while.

Anyway, so well firstly I have to ask. Any reasons not to get one ?

Well more importantly though, how much realistically should I save ?

I know that would vary quite a bit, I'd like one with a straight body with minimal rust and an engine that hasn't been completely run into the ground. I've only got a couple of grand, so obviously need more. Want to work out how much cash to stuff into my matress.  :)

I've only got a few

Just from my recent Experiance with buying a Z car, You first option is to look into 280zx's, There generally cheaper,Newer and Have much more Accessorys, Althought they dont have the same classic feel of a Easy 240z/260z,

Secondly You have to decide Whether you Want a 2 seater or a four seater, The 2 seaters generally are much more expensive but are also much more sought after then the 2+2's Because well They look better :P 2+2's however you can find in a better condition for a cheaper price being Less liked,

How much to save really depends on So many variables its hard to tell, But they has been a Incredibly good 260z 2+2 on here for 5k that sold quite quickly so Good deals do come, Its just a matter of not rushing into buying a Lemon, like i did xD

but yeah, I'd just keep an eye out on carsales the trading post and things like that, and also watch ebay as a few come up on there,

Hope this helped, Thanks mate Michael

If you were to look for a 2+2 you might be lucky and get one between 5-10 for what your asking in relatively good nick.

If you were looking for a 2 seater you would be looking at 10-15 depending whats on the market.

You might be able to find these cars listed for less, but usually there will be a bit of elbow grease and extra money involved after you have bought it to get it like you want.

These cars are not the kind of car you would give to your kids as their first car (unless they like working on cars). There is always work to do on them and I think you would have to consider it as a hobby as well as a car, because thats what its become for me. If you don't mind the extra time you'll have to invest every now and then and also the money you'll have to pay to get the parts you might need then you won't have any problems. Just keep in mind its a 30+ year old car you want to buy.

for a first zed for a young bloke stick to a 2+2...no ifs or buts..

Between $6-8000k should get you a clean ride. if its to be your daily driver make sure its mechnically sound and as mentioned before , these cars need to be nurtured, they are addictive & will burn a hole in your wallet. Or trade the suzi sierra upto a V6 Vitara !!

yeah, I'm with Chris! a 2+2 will allow you to make a smaller upfront investment and allow you more cash to put into setting up your Zed as a great daily driver.  As a 2+2 addict I bought mine for under 5k it was a one owner with  a good service history yet after driving it for 2 years it definitely needed work.  My zed is now nothing like it was and probably owes me somewhere around 12k and it's still not finished, although it is a perfect daily driver.  Just remember that it is an ongoing appreciating asset, that if looked after will give you higher returns in fun and finance than any other late model rice wagon could ever hope to give!
