Michael Posted May 23, 2008 Posted May 23, 2008 Well, i had a thread going in General but i suppose heres a better place for it, Last week or so, I brought my first Z, First car in fact. A 19somethin or other 260z 2+2 Model, I found out later by wiping away almost a tonne of Old oil it had an L28 with 240z Carbs on it, Also has a 280zx 5 speed gearbox. Anyway i got it for 2500 Delivered to my place It has some rust, But overall i Dont think its to bad for what i payed. Has a 10c piece sized hole in the firewall, =[ But overall seems fairly simple to fix, I have a mate that lives accross the road whose a Panel beater and works on all kinds of engines so im really following what he says, He also owned a 260 2+2 I planned on getting the car Roadworthy'd Rego The maybe fazing out into oneday getting a 240, But Not anymore Seeing some of the 2+2's on Viczcar has made me want This one even more ^^ Me and My mate Plan to paint it a Electric Blue'y color, Probly some Konig Rewinds Keeping it Fairly Origonal Looking overall But see how we go Anyway Let me know what you guys think Michael Quote
620Z Posted May 23, 2008 Posted May 23, 2008 Looks good Michael. Hope you get it on the road soon so you can join us on some drives. Quote
Michael Posted May 23, 2008 Author Posted May 23, 2008 Yeah, I must say the pictures mainly show the "Good points" The engines On its last legs, Needs a new bonnet, And a Drivers side door, Springs and shocks all round, Somethings funny with the brakes, Overall im planning on having it on the road in around 6 months Could be less depending on condition of the engine,Also Depending on what other rust we find, First indications say not much tho. Took off a panel here and there Looks to be mainly restricted to Bodgy Bogged up bonnet, Rh door around hideous K-mark Mirror, and the Entire Passenger side Rear 1/4 panel From Roofline down to the rocker panel. 4 Big rust spots along the way. Other sides Perfect tho, Redone by the z shop after a "Parking Accident" Apparently. Going to get a Compression test done on the engine over the weekend So that will Determin time aswell, So you may see me sometime by Hopefully by 09 =P Quote
modular9 Posted May 23, 2008 Posted May 23, 2008 First up : un-cracked dash + looks like a nice interior + 5speed + l28 for 2500 = SCore ! Body looks Pretty dam good too. Funny you should say that about you fazing the 240 but probably not. Me too. There is a pretty damn good 2+2 thread on hybridz that changed my mind. You got fun days ahead. I mean that! whipping out an engine, rebuilding it and then restarting it is probably one of the best feelings in the world for a car nut. When it is finished and someone says nice car mate and you have done most/all of it is most rewarding. Good luck with the compression test. Keep us updated. Mike Quote
Michael Posted May 23, 2008 Author Posted May 23, 2008 Yeah, ^^ First Impressions when it came were all Good, But once we found one tab of rust Another seemed to pop up, But Surprisingly All the rust this car has is Visible as it its all on the panels, (minus the 10c hole in the firewall) I looked through the Bucketloads of reciepts i got with the car as was Suprised to find out that in 1994 The same guy Spent Around 10,000 in one go, Removing all the rust/Respray $1000 Suspension job, And the reco L28+Carbs+Gearbox And 90% of the reciepts are from ZParts? And TheZshop Which i like. ^^ The fella i brought the car of said it has sat there for 3 months, It was on a slanted bit of concrete Next to a building, Between me and my panelbeating mate, we determined its more like a 3-4 year sit, But i we think he may have Blown a head gasket and sold it quick as he could cheap But "Hope" we got it before any major damage was done, We basicly gave up on the motor as soon as we Checked the dipstick. He said it wouldnt start in the morning when he delivered it so it wasnt looking good. But we checked the voltage guage and as soon as i turned the key it would drop to 2-3 volts, So we tried Jumping it, And it Started Amased everyone, So we took it around the block "Unregistered and Wreckless of course" But the motor seemed to run Really well considering. Even managed a few Line lockers And a few Drift style moves around our Wide Streets To mainly check whether the Chassis was Buckled or twisted someway, But it seemed to run really straight and True, Just always looked like we were banking into a light left corner Because of the suspension. But overall Totally please with the car, Just gotta find a Drivers side door and a bonnet along with some Itty bitty interior pieces. And its Ready to drive, Michael, Z Owner >=D Quote
stevo_gj Posted May 23, 2008 Posted May 23, 2008 Thats fantastic michael, I'm truly jealous! I had planned on getting a 260z 2+2 as my first car back when I was 17 but Mum talked me out of it. Sounds like your mate will be earning a few cartons in the next few months Keep us posted on the restoration! Steve Quote
Michael Posted May 23, 2008 Author Posted May 23, 2008 Haha, Don't worry She and the rest of my family Tried, but i decided i'd take them to a 280zx That was basicly a Bomb, Then to the 260, So comparison check won the deal ^^ All Sneaky tricks are permitted when buying a Z =D Quote
oldmates260z Posted May 23, 2008 Posted May 23, 2008 Michael, you have done very well. I talked my son into a 260Z for his first car (did not take much), he just loves it and the way everyone comes up to him and says its such a cool car. Mothers just do not understand. I ahd to wait until my son got one before i did! Good luck with getting it on the road, a word of advise from an older head, do not get it perfect before you get it on the road. Your first car aways gets a few little hits, my boys did and its painful after you have done it up. Quote
modular9 Posted May 23, 2008 Posted May 23, 2008 checking for chassis straightness by doing some drift style moves had me laughing. So is it straight ? Yeh mums dont understand but then neither do g/f's Quote
Michael Posted May 23, 2008 Author Posted May 23, 2008 Yeah, We Drove past the house a few times Over My Phone on Video Record, Had people watching, It all seemed to go well so we thought, Hell while its running... Lmfao I/m Absolutely Spewing we diddn't record The mucking around as its gotta be the most fun I've had in a car Ever =D Seems really straight, only issue is it Slants to one side But we measure the compression of the shocks and its The Shocks/Springs on one side, Since we think its sat on the same slanted piece of concrete for years were thinking its from that. Will keep Posted on Progress Michael Quote
Michael Posted May 24, 2008 Author Posted May 24, 2008 Yeah, "Oldmatesz" I Plan on making a faw mistakes, ive been givin An old pintara wagon, Me and my Step dad's old work car, Basicly roadworthy in no way, But wont need to ransfer anything.
