Michael Posted May 17, 2008 Posted May 17, 2008 Just got my 260 2+2 Delivered for 2500 bucks of a Good fella named Damian, Will post pics Tomorrow but Seems to have many more good points then bad points, ie, Reskinned dash, Redone Rear seat and front seats (But not the bottom seat half of the fronts =L! ) Headlining, Runs well till it starts to get hot from a suspected head gasket and possible water pump/radiator, Seems like no rust underneath at all, Bad points, Back left 1/4 panel Rusty, Right hand door around a a hidieos Aftermarket mirror Rusty And Could Probly use a new bonnet. Also Its sat on a slant for a good while in some pavement so now that its on a flat driveway Its slanting nicely to the left, Looks like its banking into a light corner ^^ Overall all seems good and a Panelbeating buddy of mine is gonna do the rear 1/4 for me for a old rc Nitro motor ^^ Let me know what you guys think and any helpful hints are much appreciated Quote
Glen Posted May 17, 2008 Posted May 17, 2008 Hi michael, IF its a 280 then my friend is wrecking a series 2 out but you better be quick if you want stuff as someone else seems to be taking a lot of the panels off it. Quote
George Posted May 17, 2008 Posted May 17, 2008 congrats Michael! hope this is the first of many z's to come. they are addictive. Quote
Michael Posted May 18, 2008 Author Posted May 18, 2008 Nah, Was going for a 280, But the older better looking style of the 260 won me over Just had a mate have a good look over it and we found alot wrong with it eg, Motor shot, Diff leak, Rust in some bad places, But overall still really pleased with it, Just gonna be awile longer before its finished and on the road. chris240 Posted May 18, 2008 Posted May 18, 2008 welcome & congrats.., before you go any further, flush the radiator & block out 2-3 times..on the second & third flush, run the heater for 2-3 minutes as this will stirr-up the sludge at the bottom of the heaterbox..the heaterbox is the lowest waterpoint on a zed and will hold sludge for upto 150 years ! you can also remove a heater hose and do a reverse flush by putting the garden hose over the heater hose and running it veeeery gently.. Use a bottle of Wynns (or whatever) radiator flush as well as it helps to loosen the crap... Quote
Michael Posted May 18, 2008 Author Posted May 18, 2008 Ah, K mate will do tomorrow in the morning, Thanks for the tip. Me and a mate are gonna take it out tomorrow and Do some tests to check whether the chassis is bent at all tomorrow as is looks like its been in an accident at some point, But Will see tomorrow, Engine amased everyone as the oil was Caramel lol, Started up and ran Fairly ok considering, Good enough to test out the chassis Tomorrow But after that if all's good the Big restoration begins.. Will post pics as soon as i get a day that isnt wet Thanks guys Quote
Scoota G Posted May 19, 2008 Posted May 19, 2008 If the oil is the colour that you mention then that is the Oil mixing with Water. Best thing to do is to get a compression tester and check which cylinder ( i'm thinkin between cylinder 5 and 6 ) is running a lower compression. I blew a head gasket in Melbourne on a 40 Degree day and the car made it back to Ballarat 110 kays no problem. To crack test a cylinder head costs about $80 where i live. Quote
Michael Posted May 19, 2008 Author Posted May 19, 2008 Yeah, Were gonna do that in a week once my mate gets back, We took it for a bashing today "Suprised it started again) to test whether it was crab walking down the street which it wasn't so, Looks like itll be a good project to start with. Also just went out and realized looking through all the reciepts i got with the car That the engine was actually replaced with a reco L28 in 96, So since its an unorigonal motor im not sure whether ill be rebuiling that one or whether it'd be cheaper to get another reco one. Also any idea how hard it would be to swap out L28 with twin 240z carbs With a L28 280zx turbo engine? Or what other ideas might you suggest? Wont be replacing the motor if i dont have to, Well probly be pulling it all out next week to see what sorta condition its in. Thanks for the Helpful input guys Quote
pauly_adams Posted May 20, 2008 Posted May 20, 2008 befor replaceing the engine i would run a compression test first if it come up ok just do a full overhawl. change the plugs, points, dizzy cap, rotor button, leads, and give it good tune u may find that the engine u thort was crap is actuly quite ballsy as i did. cheeers pauly Quote
Michael Posted May 20, 2008 Author Posted May 20, 2008 Yeah, Were planning on taking it out in the next week or 2 when my mate gets back from work, See what the best option is from there, He knows a fair bit bout motors so im sorta just Following what he says with it. But if i can save the engine i will. Planning on takeing it out in a week or two then doing a big rust overhaul, Paint it after thats done, Then throwing Whatever engines best back in then going for Rego Quote
