I'm planning on changing my oil (and filter) tomorrow.

Had a Mobil rep come to the club meeting last week to discuss oils, which made me think to go full synthetic 15W50.

I have a stock JDM L28 with extractors. Still fairly strong, suprising since it sat in a paddock for years. My car is on CH plates and is rarely driven. However, when it is its for club events, sprints, hillclimbs etc.....

But my question is.

What brand and grade of oil do people use and recommend?

You want any oil that has zinc phosphorus in it as it is required for the older style tappets that our older L6 engine have in them. I you use a modern oil ie synthetic they usually don't have this = you are putting extra were on your valve train = parts will wear out faster.

I recommend Penrite HPR either 30 or 40 depends on how thick you need it.

Hmmm that's a big question and you don't want to get it wrong. What did the mobil guy say about suitable oils for your car? I swear by Castrol and reckon it's the best around but I use 25/50 Race stuff by my V8 which is obviously different to yours.

The thing with Synthetic that it is for particular engines. I thought for the newer type, turbo's etc. Not so much the big bore old style engines. I am no expert especially for L28's but I am sure some guys on here can point you in the right direction. Put synthetic in an unsuitable motor and you can literally do some real damage with the bore, rings etc. That is because it is thiner and has less resistance which means it wears stuff out quicker. Short term it is great and the motor will actually make more HP because of less friction but can have diabolical consiquences down the track. Make sure and this goes for everyone you get it right. Also change your oil all the time and you motor will last much much longer.

for the older engines im with NZeder. i use penrite or penzoil in my oldies 20W/40W 20w/50w

but for modern type like the SR20DET i use Motul full synthetic 5W/40W. exy but the SR loves it. tried mobil one and absolute crap for SR. didnt like it at all. ran rough and felt like i had  an anchor throw at the back of the car dragging along. with Motul change its brilliant, runs smooth and very free reving. but price tag of $65 on special kinda sucks.

for the RB im using Nissan Special Blend 7.5W/30W recently tested in one of the magazines proven to be one best for the money. also its priced very well. so i can afford changing it every 5k km or less.

i will prob get crusified for this but i use 10w 30 / 15w30 usualy in penzoil and havent had a issue other the oil spraying everywhere (makes u fix leaks fast ). this  made a huge difference in how freely the engine runs, the old owner had put 20w50 and it was like malasis.

cheers pauly
