What Is The Build Date Of My 240Z

I will have to check it when I get home next Wednesday, Why would the Engine numberr be a more accurate indication of the build date. It would make more sense for the chassis numbers to be more sequential, due to the fact that the engine blocks are cast in large numbers then stored till the chassis is ready. Perhaps there is a register of them somewhere in this big world. Need to start the old girl up again. Hopefully only about 6 months away on starting the rebuild.

 

 

I'd expect your engine number to be somewhere around 155000 to 160000 

 

Engine block numbers ran in series. If you are missing your compliance plate, you can compare your original engine number against engine numbers of USA delivered S30s, which had build dates to work out what sort of build date your car would have, as well as comparing your chassis number to the Australian S30Z register and engine numbers listed there.  (note: you can't compare chassis numbers to USA chassis numbers, because the lines ran in parallel, and the chassis numbers have no relation to each other.)

 

 

For example from the Australian S30Z register

 

HS30-00689    240Z    1971 

 

Owner hasn't listed a compliance date, but we know its a 1971 car.

Original engine number is L24-030691 

 

Cross referencing the USA registers we can see that this engine number sits right between L24 030547 with a build date of 2/1971 and L24 030688 the build  date of 3/1971.

 

Which means it probably has a build date of 3/1971. 

 

Compliance dates are less accurate, as they were fitted when the cars arrived in Australia.

Finally got home and got the Z out of the garage. I have checked the engine number and it apppears that they also give and indication of build dates. The original engine number is L24-155530.

According to the WA Z register (maintained by Mr Camouflage) it would have had a compliance date of between 1/'73 and 4/'73 based on these examples;

 

HS30-100983    240Z    1/1973 engine no. L24-151379

HS30-101272    240Z    4/1973

(note - this is not the build date, which would be about 1 - 3 months earlier)

 

Unfortunately your compliance plate has had the left side cut off. This would have shown the compliance date like this;

Saw a Z on an american site with Engine number of L24-155576 and it says 2/73, so that must be fairly close.
