JP240z Posted October 28, 2005 Posted October 28, 2005 I've just bought my 240z without a sunroof. The hole is about 2 foot by 3 foot. I was wondering the prices for a good glass sunroof and instalation. I agree that the car would look much better without the sunroof, but I don't have the funds to replace the roof as I just spent most of my money buying the 240. It would also be a waste to replace the roof as the car hasn't seen the sun since it was last sprayed. Quote
Lynton Posted October 28, 2005 Posted October 28, 2005 My experience on the 2 seater Coupe is weld the sun roof hole back up with steel again make it original both for structural strength and re sale value forget about the "roof ventilation" wind down the windows and listen to the exhaust note. Toecutter Posted October 28, 2005 Posted October 28, 2005 Lynton is right if you've got the funds I would get a new roof. Unstitching the old one would be a pain. Might even be easier to just cut it at the pillars and weld in a new complete roof but thats just a guess on my part, because I think ZR240 just did that. Anyway anything you could do to close up the hole would certainly help with value. Most people that really like these cars know that they did'nt come out with sunroof. I'm one of those that see it as a "bastardization" of the car. I know it can be costly to repair so rather than putting in a glass sunroof I would opt for the black vynyl square sunroof that pulls back. If that's the case I'd consider welding it up although it will be expensive to do it's certainly worth while. I think your best option for a sunroof would be to see a sunroof specialist. As you can see from the responses a sunroof isn't an addition most Z owners here would do and therefore couldn't really give much useful info on how to do it or the cost. Quote
Natez Posted October 29, 2005 Posted October 29, 2005 i know its a normal answer, but check the yellow pages for sunroof places... most places will fit a new glass roof and new rubbers for around the 3-600 mark... just matters on the place... as i was looking to get my sunroof changed to glass in my old ae86 and i got qouted 550, but that was changing a metal roof vent, kinda thing, to a glass roof.... if you wanna weld it up, ive seen roof skins sell for around the 500 mark, plus shipping... Toecutter Posted October 29, 2005 Posted October 29, 2005 Hi Gav, yer I thought he meant just a hole but I am under the impression that welding in a piece of metal to that hole would be very difficult to do right and keep the correct curviture and no ripples in the roof assuming you did'nt go crazy with bog. My uneducated guess was that it would call for a new roof skin. Having said that if funds were limited rather than getting a replacemnt glass the old school vynil sunroof could be an option. Anyway moving on I noticed on another thread JP240Z is on a tight budget so I would recommend going down to Zshop in Glen Iris, I was there today and I noticed they have and old 240 parts car sitting outside with a sunroof, I'm sure you could get that cheap. Failing that just go to some junk yards and look for a second hand sunroofs to suit the dimensions your looking for. Cheers Sulio Quote

Another alternative would be to cut out an electric sunroof from one of the wrecks and welds that in. Like this guy did: http://www.thezgarage.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=183 With a 2 seater, you have to go with the type that pops up then slided back, like in the late 80's rx7's and supras. Or just have the hole welded up, like the other guys said. Quote
