280Zx Tacho (Working Obviously :p)

Hey Guys

I already have another mate trying to track down a 280zx tacho for me but i thought i'd post here as well to see whats out and a bout. I've tried tracking down a few people parting out 280's but no one seems to want to just give me a tacho :(

i think its the easier way just to retro fit the other unit in other than something aftermarket for now.

Cheers

Hi Mate

What is wrong with yours, can it be fixed ?

Have you tried All-Z-Parts ?

There was one in my parts car, but that car is now with Cozza, if you haven't already maybe shoot him a PM.

Cheers

Hi peter,

drama is mine isnt compatable with the electric dizzy as ive got a L28 in my old girl. from what i can see a few people have used the 280ZX ones and it worked. plus it should be a similar size to fit in my dash.

though id try to find a relatively close to stock one before going down the after market route. i've shot Cozza a PM so i am waiting to hear back (fingers crossed lol)

Hi,

Sorry my mistake, I read it that you needed to get the a 280ZX tacho working in a 280ZX.

You are battling the issue that I had with my L28E into S30 conversion - E12 electronic ignition won't trigger the S30 tacho.

Plenty of sites suggested other solutions "Might" work but I couldn't get a result from them. One of the issues is if you play around to much you can fry the electrics in the tacho.

One solution is to source a US 280Z tacho that is designed to work with the E12, but I didn't want to risk buying a gauge on trust from the US.

The only solution I went with was to fit a new module into the back of the original S30 tacho. works perfectly and comes with a guarantee :)

Cheers

G'day Matty & Peter , when I hooked up my 280ZX motor with E12 set up into my 76 S30 I used the original Tacho & it works fine. I wired it up thus.

               (1) I dscnctd the two wires to the ballast unit below the coil.

               (2) The B/W wire from blst cnctd to the "+" side of the coil using a dble bladed cnctn.

               (3) Using the dble blade cnctn on the "+" side of coil I ran a wire from this point to "C" pstn on E12 module attached to distrbtr.

               (4) Using a dble blade cnctn on the "-" side of coil I cnctd the Blk wire which is incorporated in the harness to module on "B" cnctn

(5)The other end of the Blk which is also incorporated in the harness is cnctd to the "-" side of the coil

               (6) The Blue & white wire from harness is also cnctd the "-".            NB: This wire cncts to the 280ZX ECU ?.

NB : In relation  to # 4 When I say harness it is the smaller one coming from R/H side which also contains the lighting wires etc.

With apologies to the forum scribe police for "TEXTING" LOL.                                                                                                                                                                                     Regards: Alan

Hi Alan

Yeah, I tried that in the first case and no joy, even tried direct connecting a spare Tacho and still no joy. This lead me a couple of possible conclusions

A. Both the Tachos I had were faulty

B. There was something amiss in my cars wiring

C. A combination of both the above.

My car does have some "interesting" wiring from a previous owner behind the dash so that could well be a factor.

I ended up running a separate wire from the coil to the EFI ECU & Tacho, this combined with the modifications to the Tacho got a result for me.

Cheers
