Hey guys I have done a search here and on the other forums and am having trouble finding anything solid on windscreen removal?

Other than pay someone to do it... Which I want to use as a last resort.

Some are saying you have to cut the old seal out and some say you can take it out without cutting it?

Any info would be great as I want to start stripping back the roof and pillars

Unless the seal has been replaced recently & is still soft & pliable then expect to cut it back to help you in pushing the screen out without risk of breaking the screen. And even then, if it is quite new, it's a nasty job trying to clean it up of the sealant; & if you don't do that well then there's a good chance it won't seal properly 2nd time around. Just order in a nice new one.

As described above if the seal is not soft then cut it. If it's soft i use a flat painter's scraper starting at the top center and push the seal down into the edge of the metal until it fold over 180 degrees. do a little at a time and alternate sides. When you get to the corner same deal but be careful of the rubber tearing. Use little to no pressure until you get all the way down both sides. Once again do not force it.

If the rubber is hard make sure you have a safety knife with a pack of blades and half an hour.

it was very easy with two people just remove the chrome then push it from the edges slowly other person braces plus works bottom mine cam out with no fuss getting it back in is the hard bit

I'm more than happy to cut it and put a new deal and and would rather a new deal for peace of mind. I'm hoping to get the glass out tomorrow so that I can get the majority of the paint stripping done.

Thanks for the tips though guys as always you're a fountain of knowledge

DO NOT REMOVE THE CHROME by hand and force

99% of the time you will warp it and end up with unusable strips.

The strips are designed to lock the screen in place, any distortion will render them useless as you will never get them back in again.

The screen seal should always be replaced as it will most definitely be perished and stressed to the point that trying to reseal the screen with it will leave the possibility of moisture making its way in afterwards.

To remove the screen and save the strips, gently cut below and above the chrome strips with a box cutter blade, once the strips are removed, then find the edge of the screens outer parameter under the rubber channel it sits in, the same again, run the blade around the outer parameter of the screen this will then allow you to gently push the screen out from its seated position.

Or, here is a more extreme method of removing the windscreen......

The car was stuffed, but the screen came out in one piece and didn't break......

Ouch!! Well I already need new guards but yes a bit extreme.

Thanks John, I'm off to work today to buy a decent knife and a heap of blades so hopefully will have it out today and can start paint stripping

Thanks for all the hints guys, got the screen out today. The seal was quite brittle on the outside due to weathering and took a bit of work to get the chrome trine out. Once they were out putting the bigger cuts in the seal and removing the screen was pretty easy.

So the cutting worked?

Hopefully the strips came out intact
