Cabin Fumes

Having only been a zedder for 6 months , I found now that I wind the window down for a summer breeze, Im getting fumes into the cabin. Its gotten to the stage where after 20-25 minutes Im starting to get a headache....serious crap..

Is this a "known" 240zed trait ?

The main hatch rubber was only just replaced. When the windows are up I have no probs..

any thoughts ?

I have this problem, same windows down it happens. Many will tell you to check the hatch seal, light gaskets, all the small gromets under the hatch and spare tyre area etc. I have done this also new shoft boot but still get them with windows down. The lats thing I have to check is the two large rubber grommets the 260's have at the rear for tight seal.

try checking your exaust i found mine had a leak ran some gasket selastic around it and now its heaps better still a bit fumy but no way near as bad also i fund when it was fum if you wind down both the windows it helps

Apparently when you wind the window down, it creates a difference of pressure in the cabin causing the fumes that hang around the back of the Z (Due to aerodynamics) to be drawn/sucked in.

 

Suggested ways of dealing with this problem are as stated above (Seal holes in shell/exhaust system). You could also extend the tip of your exhaust or have it exiting the side of your Z. It has also been suggested that rear spoilers and louvers may disrupt the aerodynamics enough to alleviate this phenomena. One last idea (that should read Crazy) is to wear a full face helmet with a clean air induction unit mounted to it,...You would look HARDCORE! \m/

Ah..I've sealed everything up thoroughly and have the rear fin with dump pipe on my exhaust which is pretty new straight from the headers through to the tip and I don't believe there are any leaks. Yer it the the desgn of the rear and when you open a window that venturi effect sucks the fumes from the rear through to the front. As I said I'm gonna check those two large gromets, mainly the one on the exhaust side, I have a hunch that might be the culprit.

lol, i heard that under his helmet there is no head, just air, but if you put your hand there, you can feel him and only blind people know what he looks like.

 

ZD44TT reckons his front spoiler made a huge difference and then his little rear spoiler (like Sulios) pretty much sealed the deal.

The bre spoiler cut fumes down by some 70% in my car.........and my rear seals are pretty crapped out.

 

I'm getting fumes from the firewall after about an 1hr of driving when the whole engine bay heats up. Got a 50c hole where the accel rod comes out that I need to get a gromet for.

 

But yeh the Bre spoiler helped heaps........

Hi Guys,

          Merry Christmas to you all. I agree with the air flow dynamics over the rear of the vehicle. The airflow needs to be altered with a spoiler or wing. When my 260z was in it's original configeration I had exhaust fume problems. When I installed the fibreglass bodykit which extends past the hatch by about 800mm with a spoiler the problem was solved. does anyone think my 70's plastic hatch louvre could be part of the problem ? you can see it on my user-ID pic..

I have the same 70's style plastic louvre on my car (my car looks very similar to yours same colour as well) and I only have fume issues when the car is stationary and idling, when I am driving along I don't notice any fumes at all. Here in Darwin I pretty much always have the windows down and my seals all look like the originals and need replacing. I think you may have to check other sources of leaks.

On a seperate question I am curious to know what colour is your interior - mine is red.

peter, over the next week I will be attempting to seal all penetrations thru the firewall 100% and some other bits & pieces.

further to your question, my interior is all black. As today got to 34 degrees, I was tempted to bake a cake in the rear hatch while the zed was in the carport...Your red interior sounds pretty rare. Is it only the seats that are red or door trims as well ? Silver paint & red interior in my opinion is definetely an awesome combo.

I know what you mean about getting hot, that's one of the reasons I leave the louvre on - to keep the sun out a bit. I know what you mean though with an all black interior it would probably be worse.

My fume issues at idle are especially noticeable because the car runs so rich at idle, still she starts easilly and generally runs well so I am not going to tinker too much at this stage, plenty of other more pressing issues with the electrics and the noisy diff. The interior on mine is red seats, red door trims, red hood lining and red diamond patterened vinyl. The carpet is black and so are the arm rests on the doors.  I love the red I reckon it looks very "period". I have heard of other silver cars with red interiors, though I dont reckon it is that common.
