So my ignition switch has just decided to crap itself. Before I order one online I thought I'd put the call out in case anyone has a spare new or good condition used one they are willing to offload.

It did my head in for a little while trying to work out what was wrong. I had been having a go installing a replacement tacho I had bought and when the car wouldn't start afterwards, I immediately assumed it was going to be something to do with the tacho wiring but not so. I worked out the engine fires but wouldn't keep running unless I held pressure on the switch in the "on" position. After pulling the switch apart, I found the black plastic is cracked/broken so I don't think there's much point trying to reco it.

I'll have to work out a good means of hot wiring it until I get my hands on a new switch.

Likewise mine is playing up! Searched the forum for threads and found yours so was wondering how you got on?? What tricks are required to replace it and where did you source a new one and keys? Cheers Tony

Two items involved.

Barrell with key, has a tang at bottom, that engages with,

Ignition switch.

The contacts inside the ignition switch do wear out, making starting hard.

The barell/key, is affected by wear on the key, .

Do you require ignition switch?

I have 2 here, genuine Nissan part number 48750-e7705 "switch assy-ign"

$50 ea inc postage within Aus.

Hi and thanks dat2kman!

Perhaps first let me try to explain what it's doing so you can advise if it is in fact the ignition switch.

When you turn the key all the way past On to Start on fires bit stop when you release the key... However...if you turn the key to On then ever so slowly and slightly turn it past On towards Start it will fire and stay on when you release the key.

Other nice feature is it will occasionally instantly loose all power and cut out but start again immediately using the above method so have assumed something in the switch /tumbler causes the power cut?!

Anyway that's my best description and have assumed a new ignition switch will fix it??

Thanks for your thoughts!

Unfortunately I hadn't actually got around to fixing mine yet. Been a bit busy lately to be able to devote any time to the Datsun. I made up a little hotwire harness with a push button start switch to allow me to drive the car for the time being. With mine it is the actual switch that is the problem, not the barrel/key. While looking around I just came across a few options on ebay. Some were a complete barrel, keys and switch, some were just the switch part. I haven't ordered either yet.

I'd be interested in buying one of the switches to save me having to get one off ebay from O/S.

I'll flick you a PM.
