Hi Guys . Have a zed with a 25lt fuel tank fitted in the Spare  wheel well . It is foam filled. The filler cap is on top of the tank so I have to open the hatch to fill. My question is do I have to have a deviding wall in the car between driver and fuel tank. Or is this to hard. Or lower the tank so it's under the car (outside) then how do I fill it with the fill cap on top. Sorry I don't have a pic of it yet.

For CAMS event yes you need a barrier, easiest is to cut a piece of acrylic to fit behind the roll cage as a barrier.

 

The general requirements for automobiles in the CAMS manual will cover it, can't remember which schedule it is.

At 25 litre, is it flush with the boot floor, while tank in wheel well?

If so, screw a sealed lid over the top, with a sealed quick release small flap lid for filler.

Or make up a raised cover.

Rip out the lower rubber bung in well, to vent/drain the new compartment.

CAMS requires any tank inside the passenger compartment to be sealed off, and externally vented.

The lower the fuel tank is obviously the lower the CoG. I routed my filler out behind the number plate and used a flap door from a HQ Holden.

 

It only requires the fabrication of a small shield in the boot.

Under CAMS that pic above, still requires a fireproof bulkhead.

Easist way is to fabricate an alloy, box, that sits directly over the top.

Box is allowed to have an inspection/filler flap, that can be positevely fastened ( captive Dzus fasteners work well)

 

It's all to do with keeping spilt fuel contained, in case of rollover/inversion. Even though the tanks themselves have pretty good sealing systems already fitted.

That should be good.

Doing the perspex full size sheet thing behind the front seats is a pita.

I just run a flat sheet of alloy cut to fit the lip of the spare wheel well, held in place with a few metal teks. Used a bit of one sided sticky door seal rubber tape stuff.

Yer , not a big fan of the full size Perspex thing, so if I totally alloy box the tank, I will have to go back to the external filler. Or can I fill from inside?

The alloy box thing,,, fabricate it with a lip on bottom, put rubber seal thingy on lip, Tek screw it to original boot floor.

On the flat top, fit a hinged flap lid thingy plate, again, a bit of thin one sided sticky rubber to seal, and some form of latch, or a Dzus fastener.

The rubber bung in the floor of the original wheel well, remove it and there is your drain.

The vent hose line outlet on top of the fuel cell, run a bit of hose. Maybe attach it to underside of alloy box, and poke it out the drain.

 

I run one f those cells in the Datsun 2000, the vent goes out through floor, but i have fitted an old pladtic fuel filter, to stop dust getting sucked in.

The bulkhead in the passenger cockpit acts as my barrier.

Gordo I got sick of the fuel smell in car after filling.

When I changed the car colour I also done some rejigging.

 

works great and I no longer need to take hatch off

Gordo. I'm not sure if your car is just track or road/track but to ensure road compliance I just cut out and used the filler area from my donor car (VZ SS Ute). Ignore the the tubular framework, that's for the GTO rear bodywork.

Put the tank under the wheel well Gordo. Lowers the centre of gravity and makes it all legal for racing with no wall. You know it's the best way to go for performance. Don't cut corners on the white car every 10th helps. Ha . Then just fill it like my car near the number plate or as per pic below.

I like your filler option Ledge. Looks neat and clean. Same with yours Peter. As my tank is 150 mm below the floor and about 110mm above floor , will try and do similar to Ledge, fill through the hatch. So I take it Ledge the hatch seals down onto the fuel filler cover with a cap inside, do you have more detail of this. This looks go to me , as I don't want to lower the tank. Need room for a rear defuser.
