adam Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 Hi all, So after having removed my head due to a suspected blown head gasket, I have found out that my head is far too corroded to reinstall. I just want to see what's out there, I am after an L28 N42 head. Can be completely bare as I can transfer everything over, but must be in fairly good shape, no cracks or warping. Let me know what you're after if you have anything available. I am located in Melbourne if that makes a difference, but courier can be arranged. Thanks, Adam Quote
Scoota G Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 There was one on ebay for the past few weeks. Maybe Lurchos has one kicking around. Quote
Riceburner Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 I have three, I'm not sure of the condition. I'll have a look at them tomorrow and PM you. Quote
G Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 There's some rebuilt ones kicking around on eBay/Gumtree... Quote
adam Posted October 10, 2014 Author Posted October 10, 2014 I'm probably using the wrong search words but I only found complete motors on eBay. Let me know how you go, Gareth. Thanks. Quote

andypurce Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 Hi I have an E30 head that has had the larger valve seats fitted and a new set of guides and been cleaned up ready to be fitted out. It has a 37cc chamber volume. It's bare otherwise but I do have the cam towers for it and the top side has been cleaned up at the workshop. I also have a full set of new valves for it. The exhaust are 33mm and the intake are 42mm. It's a high quench head and if installed with flat tops and a 1mm gasket would give you compression in the 11:1 range. I don't need it now as I am fitting a turbo and using a pretty stock N42 head. I have the receipts for it to show that I spent $1,400 on this head. If you are interested make me an offer. Cheers. Andy Quote
adam Posted October 10, 2014 Author Posted October 10, 2014 Hi Andy, thanks for the offer but I only need a standard head. I don't intend on modifying this motor at all. Quote
dat2kman Posted October 11, 2014 Posted October 11, 2014 Not an N42, or a P90a, but i have something inbetween! O5L It has the same high short side radius hump intake ports as P90 heads, but the lessed cc chambers as per N42 Stock valves, and the usial size por,ts as standard. It is virgin. Original height, and gasket showed no leaks or issues on removal. Would be a good base for a Hi Comp, high flowing head with money spent on portwork, in future! But without the hge cc volume that P90's have! It is complete, cam towers have NOT been removed. No rocker cover. Can arrange freight to you. $350 plus freight. If you decide otherwise, i'll open this to other forum members. Quote
Riceburner Posted October 11, 2014 Posted October 11, 2014 What were the O5L heads off Jason? Adam, I have one that was rebuilt many moons ago but I've measured it at 106mm?? Isn't that under minimum thickness? The other useable one was the head off my current L28 block, condition unknown, needs hot tanking etc. measures about 108mm. Both have had rockers, lash pads, retainers and cams removed. Quote
adam Posted October 11, 2014 Author Posted October 11, 2014 Thanks for the response guys. After much thought, although not ideal, I will be trying my current head with a fresh gasket. Fingers crossed all goes well but I will be in search of a spare motor to build on the side just in case, basic rebuild. If it doesn't go to plan I will have to give one of you fellas a message. Thanks. Quote
Riceburner Posted October 11, 2014 Posted October 11, 2014 I've used hylomar on the head gaskets with great success in mine and my brothers cars. Fingers crossed it works! Quote
dat2kman Posted October 11, 2014 Posted October 11, 2014 Adam, Be a good idea to get a skim cut taken off the head face, to ensure straightness as well as good surface area for the gasket. You mention some water corrosion issues, well, why not get a little welding done here and there as needed, to prevent further future issues causing dramas! Obviously get the welding done prior to skim cut, which should be anywhere between 4-8 thou. Ask for surface finish of RA40. Quote
adam Posted October 11, 2014 Author Posted October 11, 2014 I have had the head skimmed and the issue is that new water passages have been created lol it wouldn't be cost effective to get them welded up. Before I took the head off, there wasn't any signs of coolant mixing with oil so that is the only reason why I'm considering reinstalling the head. I was just losing coolant slowly resulting in overheating. Quote
Clarky93 Posted October 17, 2014 Posted October 17, 2014 I have a l28 n42 if you are interested fully rebuild with a mild cam haven't been used yet Quote
