cracker Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 Hey guys, Sorry if this has been answered before, tried an array of searches but came up zero. Can somebody please confirm (or not) the interchangeability of exhaust headers between L series engines? I have an L24 currently, and want to replace the headers, however I suspect I will upgrade to an L28 at some point and am hoping that headers will bolt straight up to the L28. Are the measurements the same (exhaust outlets) on all zed based L series motors? Are there fitment issues due to any peripheral components that should be kept in mind? Thanks all. James Quote
1600dave Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 You need to match the headers to the car. ie headers designed for a 280ZX may not fit in a 240Z even though they were both running an L28. They need to clear steering, front x-member, engine bay shape, etc, etc which may differ between different model cars. Fitment to the head is the same across L-series. So yeah, buy headers for a 240Z (or whatever car you have) and all should be good if you upgrade. Quote
JDSM Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 Only difference that I can tell is that square port headers are not suitable for round port headers and vice versa. Going on the information in the below thread, both heads are likely to be square port so it should not matter as long as they don't foul on anything: http://www.viczcar.com/forum/index.php?topic=6012.0 I've got a set of L28 headers (N42) hanging in the shed. You can have them if you want. You could even use them, you would just need to weld a small hole in one of the joins if you are fussy. Quote
cracker Posted September 24, 2014 Author Posted September 24, 2014 Thanks guys - JDSM thanks for the link, very useful thread by Steve! Thanks also for the offer for the headers, hopefully I won't have to take you up on it though. The reason I am trying to do my research is because I am contemplating having custom headers made up, rather than buy an average set off the shelf/ebay. Because of the increased cost I really only want to spend the money if they can then be used on an L28 as well, if that's the way I decide to go (which, money permitting, is likely). For some reason I recall hearing that the outlets measure differently, but it sounds like that isn't the case, and as long as the exhaust/headers stay in my car (or a 240z) they should work fine. Cheers, James Quote
peter mc Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 james ,,, the sw motorsport pipes work ,, have tested them all .. his pipes are great for the cost Quote
JDSM Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 No stress, let me know if you want them. I binned them in favour of a nice wrapped tuned-length (ish) set from Owen and they certainly do the job. To be frank, with my relatively low HP goal, I cannot tell the difference at all after switching, other than less exhaust gas escaping before the muffler, haha. The old ones were generic Advance headers. Could be used for chopping up for fitment, et cetera. SW headers do look great with the long primaries, ceramic coating, etc. We all saw Roberto's and I am personally very jealous! Quote
