Crankshaft storage

How do you guys store your crankshafts long term? I won't be using it for quite a while and I want it to stay clean and not rust. I was thinking of spraying it with fish oil and then covering it heavily with cling wrap?

 

Also, is this wear mark from the rear main seal an issue? I think my current L28 was the same when I rebuilt it.

Hi,

  I usually spray them with CRC and wrap with cling wrap, then wrap in cardboard for a bit more protection if storing for any length of time. Store laid horizontal because if stored on its end and knocked over you can bend the crank. Get the crank polished before using, to take out any imperfections.

In terms of storage my LD28 is in a chipboard box custom made for transporting the thing. Use some bubble wrap around it and put it in the chipboard box - should be able to get this cheap enough from Bunnings + Officeworks (for bubble wrap).

 

That wear on the rear is quite normal and would be taken care of at time of rebuild / machining. It's caused by the rear main seal.

What about taping the journals with electrical tape?

Might be a pain in the arse to remove later, I'd just bubble wrap around the journals and then put packing tape around the bubble wrap to hold it in place.

 

You might have seen that box idea from another photo I posted a while ago. But I can't find it right now.

I'd probably spray it with heaps of thick oil, get a few bags of silica gel and place them in one of those vacuum bags and suck the air out. No chance of condensation then.
