Administrators gav240z Posted June 19, 2014 Administrators Posted June 19, 2014 Hi guys, I'm looking to buy a Suzuki Jimny as a runabout car, the main reason is that I borrowed my sisters Jimny while she was traveling and living in Chile for the last 7 months and it's been reliable, practical and good on fuel. So we have decided we'd like to get 1 also. The problem is finding 1 in NSW, I've seen a couple interstate that might check the box (seems Vic and Qld has the good ones) and since I'll have to give my sisters car back in a few weeks I'm trying to see if I can find 1 soon. I even put a wanted ad on Gumtree for 1. http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/1049582213 But my question is, what happens if I go for say a car like this? http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/stanhope/cars-vans-utes/2004-suzuki-jimny-wagon-march-2015-reg-rwc/1049531071 It has long registration until 2015 - does that transfer over to NSW? Or do I need to issue a refund in Victoria and re-register / re-do RWC (Blue Slip) in NSW? As a side note, this whole state independent registration system is bollocks. We should have a standard national system. Just my 2 cents. Quote
andyk_79 Posted June 19, 2014 Posted June 19, 2014 Hi Gav Interstate transfers you have to get a whole new rego and get a refund from the previous state. NSW you also have to get an unregistered car inspection (formerly blue slip) passed. I agree - the whole system is convoluted and stupid and should be nationalised ! Quote
Moderators PB260Z Posted June 19, 2014 Moderators Posted June 19, 2014 Gav Andy is right you need start fresh with NSW rego and will not get any refund for the remaining Vic reg from the NSW folk. You will have to send the plates to Vic for a refund, less fees You will also need to pay stamp duty on the purchase price of the car. So in short, don't pay extra for long Vic rego - ideally you want a car that has just enough Vic rego to get it to NSW. Good luck mate. Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted June 19, 2014 Author Administrators Posted June 19, 2014 Thanks, my g/f actually still has a Victorian drivers license with her parents address in Melbourne so that might come in handy when registering the car . At least for the first year. Quote
PZG302 Posted June 19, 2014 Posted June 19, 2014 If you have the conatcts to keep it Vic rego then keep it Vic rego, saves a lot of hassles. I'm pretty sure you don't have yearly road worthies in Vic, just for transfer of ownership, so if the seller already has that then you are good to go in keeping it a mexican car. Quote
