Hi I recently bought a stripped down 260 2+2 and can't find the build date stamp, (it could be in a box some where.....) but was wondering if there is some where I can search online for the year! I have the number plates, chassis number, engine number.

It seems to have al the plates except build date, still has color code and matching engine chassis plate. Is there a place it is stamped on the body?

Cheers ben

No but many parts have date stamps on them. Does it still have the spare wheel? There might be numbers stamped on that to help us identify year.

It does ur im unsure if it original it has more of the hot wire rims. Not the  4 spoke zed rim. It does have the full tool kit with wheel chocks and the radio is a hitachi cassette am only. If there is number in there u can tell from? The alloy kick guards on the door entry are just plain one also don't say 260z on them.

Under dashboard there is some Japanese kanji characters on some components they often have date stamps on them which could give some idea of exact year.

But post some photos of the car and we might be able to get a good idea of the year. No old rego stickers?

So many components get changed over the years, but if we find enough components that indicate a certain year or year range we can narrow it down and be pretty certain of exact year.

I'm pretty sure it's the standard bonnet I'll have to look tomorrow but it doesn't have bonnet vents. It came with factory ac. I can't check the dash because that is a replacement one. The engine is original. So I assume the gear box and diff are also.

Suggest you post the VIN# (as stamped on firewall - & see if that matches the data plates) & then by comparing to other cars with documented history you may find you can narrow the car's age down to within a month or two.

Don't go by the vented bonnet unless you're sure it's original by paint coverage, like any bolt-on panel it could have been swapped out.

The body shell will provide some clues if you know what to look for, but easier to start with the VIN# & more precise.

I found out its a 77 I went and regod it for 3 months to swap it in my name and cancelled it straight away. They let me rego it no questions asked. I don't know the last owners name and the last time it had rego was 1988. Haha. Just swapped into my name and technically can drive it around besides the fact it's in pieces haha. Good old SA gov

Thanks for all your help

Your gauges will have a slighly different type face on them then, along with different door catches and some other subtle changes over earlier cars. The later cars often had less terminal rust. ;) But now they are all so old it probably doesn't matter.

There are slight different things I notice as from memory my first two were around the 75 mark like compliance plate isn't under the bonnet on this one that's were the chassis number is. Yes rear struts are different have a support bracket in then and strut is in a different angle. Kick guards are different. Centre consol is different. Battery tray is different. That's all I have noticed so far. But have only spent a little time with it
