rmoret Posted April 2, 2013 Posted April 2, 2013 So there's a few write-ups on this conversion for s30 4 lug to 5 lug hubs but as for the Z31 5-lug hubs - does anyone know if they HAVE to be from a Z31 turbo? Will 5 lug hubs from any (84-87) Z31 which includes non-turbo work ? Quote
pauly_adams Posted April 2, 2013 Posted April 2, 2013 only turbo z31 were fitted with 5 stud from factory that is the reason why you need turbo ones Quote
C.A.R. Posted April 2, 2013 Posted April 2, 2013 Or you can use 80's Ford Falcon fronts (also direct bolt up). 240Z/260Z rear's you can just weld on extra material, machine, re-index & re-drill. Trying to find Z31 turbo hubs is a PITA. Quote

rmoret Posted April 2, 2013 Author Posted April 2, 2013 USA has 5 lug NA hubs. I've got a set lined up but are they worth getting? AFAIK they're exactly the same as turbo 5 lug hubs except for the rear inner companion flanges which would accept 6 bolt CV shafts (more commonly available here in AUS) rather than the turbo versions 4 bolt. Six_Shooter Posted April 3, 2013 Posted April 3, 2013 NA Z31 never got the 5 lug hubs after '86 in Australia? IIRC it was only '84 and '85 Z31 non turbo that was 4 lug here in North America. From what I've seen both NA and Turbo hubs will work. Rears need to be drilled however. Also there's no need to weld on any material. As long as the pattern is drilled properly, there is more than enough material between the stud and the outer edge of the flange. FWIW, this is how mine have been for a couple years now. I had a machinist drill my hubs, and he said that the material thickness was within spec for fatigue. Quote

Six_Shooter Posted April 3, 2013 Posted April 3, 2013 Are you referring to 240Z/260Z rear stub flanges or modified Z31 units? S30 stub axes, the Z31 stub axles won't fit, at least not without finding a set of bearings that will fit the strut housing and the Z31 stub axle. Even then, the length of the axle might not allow everything to fit correctly. It's been a while since I looked at using the Z31 stub axle so I don't recall all of the details, I just remember the bearing issue being the biggest road black initially, and is why I opted to re-drill my stock stub axles. It also seems that information of 5 lug swaps is that the Z31 stub axle can not be used. Quote
Ben Posted April 4, 2013 Posted April 4, 2013 If the reason for the conversion is due to big power, then I recommend billet 5-lug stubs (there are several manufacturers out there). The original ones are around 40 years old these days, and the 240Z stub axles are smaller (and weaker) than the 260Z ones. Not cool for longevity behind a grunty L6 or V8. I admit, I'm using 260Z Stubs with adapters to suit the Z31/HR31 turbo 4-bolt Birfield-Rzeppa CV's. But if I had the money, I'd replace both the stubs and adapters with billet units. If you're looking for a better selection of wheels, then it's a bit of stuffing around for a cosmetic result (IMHO). Quote
Fairlady Z Posted May 6, 2013 Posted May 6, 2013 if not to late. anwer to ur question like all above 5 lug only turbo models z31. i used z31 stub axles in my 260z hubs. reason wanted 5 lug and it will bolt to my 4bolt CV that were with the R200LSD diff. as mentioned above bearings need matching to fit the 260z hub and the 300zx axle. big issue is 260z hub is imperial dimension while 300zx stub axle metric. you wont find a suitable bearing. trust me i tried and came with 0. so i machined the 260z hubs (approx 1mm) both inner and outer. also had it machined offset by 10mm towards outside. than bought of the shelf bearings that suit the shaft and the new machined hub. and all bolted together. ill be doing similar again but keeping the 4 lug for my 240z. also i had my machinist cut the z31 caliper bracket clean it and what u know it matched the z hub perfectly. than refited complete z31 rear disk setup. hardest part is finding a machine shop willing to do it at respectable price. im lucky i got a retired machinist 73yo that has all the gear in his backyard. Still has the custom made bed to house the 260z/240 rear hubs. as soon as i get me stub axles he be doing this again. Quote
Agno Posted May 6, 2013 Posted May 6, 2013 also i had my machinist cut the z31 caliper bracket clean it and what u know it matched the z hub perfectly. than refited complete z31 rear disk setup. Interesting. Does the 300ZX internal drum handbrake mechanism fit in with all these mods? Edit: Scratch that idea, I thought Z31/HR31 rear ends had the same park brake assemblies. Quote
