luvemfast Posted March 6, 2013 Posted March 6, 2013 Got the CDI box fitted and now the tacho isn't working in my 280ZX. I thought that it would be ok, but apparently not. It was installed by an auto elec. Was he trying hard enough? I wonder....... Anyone able to help? Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted March 6, 2013 Moderators Posted March 6, 2013 You don't need a tacho; just install a shift light. Best thing I did. Quote
luvemfast Posted March 6, 2013 Author Posted March 6, 2013 I like the tacho. Helps gauge speeds and getting to know the car better. I think they're important! Quote
benny Posted March 6, 2013 Posted March 6, 2013 You need to work out where the tach is drawing its signal from and which wire is being used to sense... it may just be a case of the tach wire being on pos not neg or visa versa. Quote
luvemfast Posted March 6, 2013 Author Posted March 6, 2013 It's a negative trigger, will check. Hopefully, the guys just a dumbass! Quote
benny Posted March 6, 2013 Posted March 6, 2013 if no luck you may need a tach signal convertor or something... do you have a spare tach?? Can be easier to test with one in the engine bay. Quote
Whoray Posted March 6, 2013 Posted March 6, 2013 Just happens I have an aftermarket tacho that's never been used. Quote
luvemfast Posted March 7, 2013 Author Posted March 7, 2013 Maybe we'll need to set that up, before dyno tune Quote
Retro Z Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 Just install am aftermarket tacho. I installed a 5" autometer one, fits perfectly in my 240z so may fit a zx aswell (only 3 wires) +, -, coil neg Quote
NZeder Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 Does the CDI have a tach output? good point you might need a tach adapter to work with the CDI unit. What brand of CDI are you using? Quote
luvemfast Posted March 7, 2013 Author Posted March 7, 2013 Summit Racing Street & Strip® High Vibration Multi-Spark Digital CD Ignitions SUM-850606 Tachometers The yellow wire on the Summit Racing Street & Strip Ignition provides a trigger signal for tachometers, shift lights, or other add-on RPM activated devices. This wire produces a 12 volt square wave signal with a 20% duty cycle. Some vehicles with factory tachometers may require a tach adapter to work with the Summit Racing Street & Strip Ignition. If your GM vehicle uses an inline filter, it may cause the tach to drop to zero on acceleration. If this occurs, bypass the filter. For more information on tachometers, see page 4. Maybe a monster tacho with shift light is in order....... Quote
benny Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 get a tach adapter... monster tachos dont make you go faster Quote
luvemfast Posted March 7, 2013 Author Posted March 7, 2013 monster tachos dont make you go faster Of course they do! You see fully HEKTIC Falcodores with them all the time.......... Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted March 7, 2013 Moderators Posted March 7, 2013 All those automatic Lancer coupes have monster tacho's in them...it must do something... Quote
Riceburner Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 Can't run it from the coil due to the multi spark setup, Has to come from the CDI output. With or without tach adaptor will depend on what voltage/signal your tach requires, do you know what it uses? Being a later model, you may get lucky and be able to hook it straight up. Quote
lightmaster240z Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 What wong with my Lancer it's fully sick now Quote
NZeder Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 What wong with my Lancer it's fully sick now now it can match the mirage panther with its 8 speed super shift from the 80's Quote

I investigated it aaaaggggeeeesssss ago and thought it was a straight hook up. Will look into it next week when it's back here. Quote
