Might ad that I used the 260z dizzy clamp plate with the 280Z dizzy. Obviously there is a timing problem but how do I fix it. Got me stuffed #*@!?.Hope someone out there can help.

dude trying to read that was a complete mind f!!k and I'm only 22 , but i think i have the gist of it. i have had a problem very similar to you what you will need to do is get cylinder 1 at top dead centre this can be done by 1) disconnecting the lead from your coil to your dizzy 2) taking the spark plug out and holding your finger over the hole and having someone crank the car but only in little taps it you will have a burst of air come out of it at this point stop 1 cylinder has just fired ( it turns clock ways from memory) from there place the dizzy cap over the dizzy and see where the rotor button is pointing it should be right on or just past a connector on the dizzy cap where the spark plug lead goes in this will be your cylinder one on your dizzy work from there in your firing order going clock wise and presto your problem should be sorted.

We've covered this one before, you need to adjust your oil pump / distributor drive. Grab a manual, pull of the oil pump and set it to factory spec. If you search the forum you'll find all the info here.

Also, invest in a timing light; they help so much when it comes time to setup a new distributor! Another way to find top dead center of #1 cylinder is to remove the oil filler cap and with a light, have a look at the cam lobes for number 1. When the timing mark is on the zero on the crank pulley, the two cam lobes should form a "V" or like rabbit ears or as in one at 45' and the other 45' in the other direction. With the torch on it you will see what I mean. Then the rotor should be pointing to number 1 plug lead and then go anti-clockwise 1 5 3 6 2 4..

Hey mate I know how you feel, we just try to nip it in the bud when anyone starts posting without vowels ;)

May I ask what a dizzy spacer is? I did the 280zx dizzy swap recently but it was just a simple in/out job.

Good luck!

I think what he means by "dizzy spacer" is the seperate base for the distributor thats bolted to the front timing cover wioth those two 10mm bolts. Just be sure you use a base made for the electronic dizzy as the points type ones are different.

ZMan ,I checked out Dizzy base with wrecker who assures me it is a  Electronic 280z base.

Hope this doesn't come across as "gibberish" to the LEARNED scribes who obviously have little better to do.  (Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit.) Can we give it a rest & move on fellas. Just want to get my car going so prefer constructive advice, not criticism.

Try retarding your timing say back to 6-8deg.....if your back-firing you may have advanced too far.

(I really had to read your 1st posting a few times over.)

Ahh yes, the Sewing circle of Life is now complete. What if i take some pictures of my setup and put them up here. Would that be better?

Many thanks to those that tried to help me with zcar problem. And to those who found it more pressing to

deliberate on less important things, thanks also for their good natured humor. Have been reading Silverz's post & it has all the relevant info (oops) information I require. And also how I should type future posts.
