sexual_sushi Posted March 19, 2009 Posted March 19, 2009 Hi all, I found I have had a small fuel leak that has been spraying onto my mechanical fan blades, now the blades flex quite a bit and makes an incredible noise at high revs. I wouldn't mind going with an electric fan setup. Searching the forums I found that 260Coupe recommended http://www.daviescraig.com.au/Thermatic_Fans-list.aspx in the following forum http://www.viczcar.com/forum/index.php/topic,2190.0.html I was just wondering if anyone has had any experience with davies craig setups and what they would/wouldn't recommend? (I''ll pm 260coupe aswell) The guide on the Davies Craig website recommends 2 12inch fans (part number 0062) and either the mechanical thermal switch (0401) or the electronic thermal switch (0402). Im thinking this might be all too expensive atm, but if I were to go down this route I would probably go for the chrome fans (0072) and the electronic switch (0402) adding up to about $744.38. I was just wondering what everyones opinion is? It's for my 240z which atm has a fairly stock engine and is only for street use but I am building a 3.1 litre stroker in the future. I don't mind investigating other brands but my only stipulation is that it must look tidy as this is for my hero car Failing all this, does anyone know where to get a stock replacement for the plastic fan blades? I'll try repco tomorrow. Quote
Michael Posted March 19, 2009 Posted March 19, 2009 Id recommend him, My sincle 10 inch ( i think, might be slightly bigger) (Spans from top to bottom of radiator fins) Works extreamly well, Sucks so much air through constantly That temp guage diddnt go and hasnt gone pat 3/8th way on temp guage, Even when i picked it up in stop start traffic on a 30+ Degree day! Anyway yeah Good good fans. Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted March 19, 2009 Moderators Posted March 19, 2009 I'm using a single 12" davies craig fan but I think it's not enough like you said. If you do end up using them,2 fans would be better. I also have two 8" fans that I'm going to try and see how they cool on a warm day. The single one stops the temp from climbing but doesn't actually cool...Hope the twin 8's do a better job! Quote
620Z Posted March 19, 2009 Posted March 19, 2009 Do it once and do it properly. Get the twin fans. Quote
PZG302 Posted March 19, 2009 Posted March 19, 2009 Measure what space you have to mount them and if they will fit hit the wreckers or e-bay and look for falcon or commonwhore fans. genearlly twin and generally pretty cheap. Go to supercrap and buy the temeprature control switch as a seperate part and wire in yourself. Should be able to pick up AU Falcon twin fans for about $140-150. Quote
Scoota G Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 Heres a few shots of the EL Falcon twin fans i installed. As you can see they are wider than my standard radiator so i made brackets which then had to be modified to fit. Bit of a tight squeeze but they do a fantastic job. Then fans came from a local (Ballarat) wreckers for $80. Also i had to upgrade the fuse from 30amp to 40amp. Quote
sexual_sushi Posted March 25, 2009 Author Posted March 25, 2009 thanks for all the replies, still not sure what im going to do, i really wanted to get this done before the nationals but i dont think i will be able to afford it. maybe ill get some of the cheaper falcon fans for the moment and update soon. michael and zedman (or anyone else) do you have any pics of your fans installed? Quote
sexual_sushi Posted March 25, 2009 Author Posted March 25, 2009 oh also repco can't supply a stock/aftermarket replacement fan, they did have one listed for a 280c and he gave me the measurements so ill check out if they are interchangeable. Does anyone know anywhere else to get a replacement fan besides the states? Quote
260Coupe Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 here are mine, 2 x 10" fans off Ebay (cheap n cheerful Chinese fans but they work a treat), $25 each only 6.6 amps each and pull plenty of air! Quote
Michael Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 Sorry for the late, Reply heres a pic of mine, - Best i could, Also phone pics some 2 mgpix Camera xP But yep Good good fan, hehe Oh and thats overspray, Didnt notice till now xD Thx mate *Note my Fan is run mechanicaly on a switch that i turn on just after it starts to warm up, sucks Heaps! of air in =D Much more then The 260z standard fan i had did, =] Quote
sexual_sushi Posted March 27, 2009 Author Posted March 27, 2009 thanks for the pics guys, looking very tidy i see everyone has made brackets rather than going through the radiator, this is what i'm going to do as well i just bought two 10in fans from a holden (i feel dirty ) off of ebay (see pics below). Going to make up the bracket hopefully next week and have them on in time for the nationals Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted March 27, 2009 Moderators Posted March 27, 2009 Bad thing is the dirt never seems to come off!.... Interested to see how your setup goes though... Quote
Scoota G Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 (i feel dirty ) You'll have to see the Rev, he's sure to do a Baptism for ya Quote
sexual_sushi Posted April 2, 2009 Author Posted April 2, 2009 haha so i scrubbed for a while but the dirt remains. ALthough I'm pretty sure these are jsut the cheap thermo fans that someone made up to go onto a holden so I think i can live with that. BUT I got them and they are actually gold not yellow. So I have pulled the motors out so I can paint them this weekend the same colour as the body Here is the bracket anyways.... We cut off one of the mounting tabs on the radiator when we installed a polished overflow bottle to the bolt hole on the top left is actually going through the radiator bracket :S Quote
mtopxsecret6 Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 Its better to run one single fan.. ie 16 inch fan. I dont know what size the radiator is though.. if it dont fit then 2 twelves will have to do then. Quote
stevo_gj Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 Its better to run one single fan.. ie 16 inch fan. Hey man, why is that? Quote
Zeddophile Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 Hey man, why is that? I'm guessing the thought behind it would be something to do with the twins interfering with each others airflow.... Which shouldn't be a problem if they have a good shroud around them, like on the AU falcon twin thermos I put on my rangie. Quote
sexual_sushi Posted April 2, 2009 Author Posted April 2, 2009 hey mtop, yeah why is that? Is it just because it's pulling more air? my white 260z has one big fan but the problem is that it only covers about 65% of the radiator as the radiator is a lot wider than it is high. I'm sure with a decent shroud this would be alright but without one its only cooling 2/3's of the radiator as they sit so close to them. i wouldn't think the airflow of two fans would be a problem? so long as they are both pulling air through it should all be heading in the same direction? all you need is air being pulled through as much of the radiator as possible and I would think you would get more surface area with 2 small fans. Correct me if I'm wrong though... the only downside I can think of is that 2 small fans might draw a bit more current than one bigger fan? i'm thinking about making a shroud eventually but it's not gonna get done in time for the nats. I also recall the aerodynamic tests on hybridZ that have the air all ducted to the radiator from the front of the car, better for cooling and aerodynamics. It's an interesting read for those that have access to it Quote
mtopxsecret6 Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 i got that information from the davies craig website in actuall fact. I did some reseach for cooling issues for my 32.. unfortunately the depth of a 16inch limits me.. so i have 2 twelve inch fans. The current draw on a single 16 over two would be about the same i would guess. I read the best setup was with a big single.. and a shroud drawing the air from all four corners of the radiator like a ventury effect. I havent really payed much attention to my radiator yet.. might go have a look at it tomorrow afternoon to investigate. I have a one of these on the 32. http://www.sideshowsperformancewiring.com.au/index.php?categoryid=21 Quote
sexual_sushi Posted June 22, 2009 Author Posted June 22, 2009 Ok so I've had the twin fans on for a while now and haven't had a problem. The accelerator seems a lot more responsive now (the engine can rev a bit easier because it isn't spinning a giant fan) and it reduced a great deal of noise from the engine bay. Now all I want to clean up the wires. I think I did a fairly neat job but there are just so many wires running around the coil area and the switch etc look quite raw. I want to build the relay and the thermo switch into a box that can be painted either black or the body colour to hide all of this mess and then try to hide the wires as much as possible. I might also end up making a shroud eventually but there doesn't seem to be a need for it. But anyway, I would highly recommend this mod to everyone. Quote
mtopxsecret6 Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 looks good sushi, definately need to clean up the wiring and the temp probe wire aswell. Quote
stevo_gj Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 Hmm I never really noticed your black air box before, but it looks great! I think I'm gonna paint mine black as well. Quote
tbscobraZ Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 Second that, black airbox looks tops especially matte. Quote
mtopxsecret6 Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 technial term is flat gloss, matte(or matting agent) is what you add to the gloss product to produce a lower reflectivity at 60 and 85 degress. useless information for most i know. Quote
xa1973 Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 Another piece of useless information......... Did you kinow that matte black is the coolest colour of the spectrum....not white... Quote
