Refoaming seats

Hey guys,

I've had a bit of a look through the forums and I can't quite find what im looking for...

 

I recently bought some nice looking 240z seat, but seeing as though they have been

sat on for the last 40 odd years they are fairly saggy... I mainly want to know whats the

best sort of foam to use (can you be any more specific than high density???), and how

thick the foam should be, ie to allow for compression, but still pad out the seat without

it bulging. Im guessing that doing the seat base will be a lot easier than the back, but

I'm up for the challenge because the Vinyl is in quite decent condition, and IMO is worth

the effort.

The only problem i have with Clarke Rubber is that their prices are RIDICULOUS!!!!

I'm guessing that its because they have no competition, but its really just stupid

how much you can pay for a little bit of foam...

Well, at least go pick their brains about what type of foam you're after.

Maybe try a motor trimmer then?

If you think Clark Rubber is expensive then maybe dont try a motor trimmer

 

Maybe you had a bad experience with Clark Rubber. I've always had good ones. They're always willing to help out and usually prices are reasonable.

Did my seats on the original REVZED back a couple of years, if I remember right it didn't cost me more than a hundred bucks (which is very cheap)  I just found it on my build thread if it helps.  http://www.viczcar.com/forum/index.php/topic,3123.30.html

Thanks for that reverendzed. This gives me a little incite into how the job should be done.

 

I'll go ahead over the next few days and get some foam and see what i can do...

 

The last thing I'd like to do to the seats to get tehm back to pristine condition is to get rid

of those small tear marks. Someone mentioned to me that there are places that do vinyl

repairs. Does anyone know of a reasonably priced place in Victoria, and what sort of fee am

I looking at paying?

I bought new moulded foam from the States  made for 240z's.They cost me altogether $500 to get  here but then I had a set of new covers I bought several years ago so the extra cost was worth it. You can go down that path but it would probably be better to start with new covers as well. The foam in these seats is very firm in fact firmer than the foam which clark rubber sell. Clark rubber are always helpfull and reasonably priced. I will put up some pics tomorrow when the sun is up.

I'd just like to point out that these seats are in very good condition, but they do have the odd small scratch. I'm not going to pay for a whole new set of covers when most people wouldn't be driving around in seat that are in such good condition... :'(

So i went to Clarke rubber and got a quote. They said it should roughly cost $200... A little much

for my taste... So i went online (ebay) and had a bit of a looksie for some high density foam there.

I can get a 1"X24"X30' roll of high density foam from the USA for $90 and $12 postage! While I

know that 1" is not thick enough, i see no reason why it can't be tripled up and glued. In actual

fact, this should make it easier to cut it into the correct shape...

Well, they have virtually no competition...

It's obviously marked up doubly.

we have a few places here in adelaide,

you could try

fitch the rubber man... foam & rubber, bit pricey too, but more reasonable, MOST times

we also have Roache foam on churchill road whom do a fair bit of everything if you follow me,

we buy filter foams from theres which are petro chemical base resistan, ie for our machinery where oil based products like hyd oil are involved, Not a hydraulic oil filter however.

but it appears like a foam you could use for top coating a firmer structure before wrapping it in vinyl....
