Hello there dat2kman! Presently at home for a short while to give my cars a run. The Casino car from page 13 wasn't really a low number car. It was a "transition" Z having early 2000 Roadster type gearbox, fender mirrors and hand throttle, but with later cylinder head, pillar vents and storage boxes. An original one owner unmolested car until it was T boned. I have no idea what chassis number the car had because it was scrapped after wrecking. The firewall section and ID plate would have been scrapped with the rest of the car. I was hoping to locate the family and find some info for Gavin while we were holidaying at Evans Head but they had moved, so the numbers remain a mystery.

I know this has been covered before. Someone asked about 240Z track wheel alignment as they couldn't get their car to steer well. Lurch gave measurements of Front Castor = 5deg positive - the more the better. (L&R) Front Camber = Start at 3.5 deg negative & adjust from there, via tyre temps (L&R) Front Toe = 1 mm toe in (L&R) Rear Camber = 2.4 (L&R) probably too much, but what are the tyre temps reading? Rear Toe = 1 mm toe IN (L&R). Toe out makes IRS cars nervous in the rear. According to the person asking for help this made a big improvement. Would this be the same for a road car or would I need something different? I recently went to get an alignment check and was told it couldn't be done because a 240Z wasn't on the computer data, as it was too old. I do have some old style alignment guys around but would like to have some specifications to take to them.

The slop in the monkey motion shift mechanism is quite common. The pins and springs need replacing, but usually where the springs hit under the shift plate gets worn and needs rebuilding and refacing. The shift rod (looks like a golf putter) hole will need redoing with a new pin. All of the small amounts of play add up. I had all of this done by a guy in Melbourne - back to brand new feel for around $280.

I had a similar issue. Wheel bearings weren't quite adjusted up properly. Worth a look before going to more extremes.

Thanks Dave. Would the part number also cross reference to any other Datsun with the same part eg 510 sedan?

I found the parts number (48910-23100) for the steering column bearings, wrote it down and gave it to my mate. He phoned the local Nissan dealer (Klosters Newcastle) but no luck - apparently no longer available. The parts book in section 70-1 shows those roller bearings were used up to July '73. Not sure after that date because my parts book only goes to July '73. Could the same part be superseded by a later number?

Thanks Gavin. I do have a parts book but was hoping there were generic bearings my mate could use rather than chasing around for genuine parts. I'll check the parts book and give my mate the bad news. I emailed that magazine article. It's in correct order, just upside down/sideways.

Thanks for the offer Justin. He has a couple of spare columns but all of the bearings are shot. Not worth playing around with used bearings, that is why he is chasing part numbers and suppliers to purchase new ones.

A mate just rang. He has an early Z (no 259). He has been trying to tighten up his steering and one problem area is the bearings in the steering column. He tried to buy new bearings from a bearing specialist but they are a poor fit so the problem has not been fixed. I had a look on Ebay and there were all sorts of wheel bearings, but no steering column bearings. Does anyone know a source to purchase these? Are early model Zs different to later?

Will get a Repco or Nissan gasket and give it a try. If not then its Hylomar! Thanks for the help.

Because of the angle of a 240Z engine, the back right hand corner has started to weep between the rocker cover and head where oil tends to sit. Nothing major but annoying. I will replace the gasket but just wondering if I should use a gasket sealant of some sort. Any suggestions? I am a bit wary of using too much pressure when tightening the rocker cover bolts.

Pay my bro in law when you pick them up would be fine, that way you can check them. I'll just send the good ones up with him. Hopefully I won't need spares but you never know, so will keep the not so good ones. Kev says he is coming down in a month or so. I will let you know when they are up at Eaton's Hill. Not sure whether you received my previous email. My bro in law is down this way in a month or so. He lives at Eaton's Hill so close to you. He can transport the gutter trims. I have 2 pairs - one pair in excellent shape for $50 or a second pair with the bend section not perfect for $20. Let me know.

Yes have a couple of pairs. Don't understand the comment about plated clips. The pair on my car and both original pairs have no clips or sign of having clips - it is the shape of the part that holds it in place. Fish oil inside the trim would help preserve paint work. Your problem is postage. Unfortunately I am out of the country in a few days until next year. I have looked at the shape, you would need a very large sheet of plywood cut to shape to protect the parts, more cost and messing around than needed, which is probably why you haven't had much response. If you aren't in a major hurry (the missing trim isn't stopping your car from driving) I will be catching up with my bro in law early next year and you could probably pick the trims up near Strathpine. Save on courier. You might find some in Brissy in the mean time. If not a couple of months shouldn't be a major problem.

I have a couple of pairs. Will have a look tomorrow and see what condition, although still won't solve post problems. 105cm limit for Aust post is correct I think. Can't believe you can't find some in Bris Vegas.

Are you talking about the stainless trims that sit above your door/down beside the screen for a 2 seater? I do have some somewhere but they would be very difficult to post.

It's a very unusual coarse pitch thread. I haven't seen a bolt with the same thread.

Condition doesn't matter too much. Can sandblast/replate.
