Whoray Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 Anyone know how to fix a cross threaded spark plug without removing head? Was cross threaded when I bought it but does not appear to be seating properly. Quote
sco_aus Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 I called a thread repair guy, he came and fixed, not cheap, but cheaper than fixing my attempts at repairing it. Quote
dat2kman Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 There are specific Helicoil repair kits,,,,,,, but,,,,,,,, how do you propose to not let the swarf from drilling and tapping, and the Helicoil tang, from all dropping down into the cylinder??? . . . I got it, turn the whole car upside down, and working from underneath, it will all fall outwards, caution point, make sure to wear eye goggles to prevent swarf etc from falling down into yor eyes,,,, most important!M Quote

d3c0y Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 Depends how much racing slap you have... might fall down the side of the piston. Quote
nizm0zed Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 coat a rag in oil/grease, then stuff it down the spark plug hole. Tap it out, then pull the rag out. All the swarf will stick to the greasy rag and come out with it.. Totally legit, really.... (make sure you film the whole thing for our amusement education) Quote
luvemfast Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 Yup. Really sorry I told you to ask the guys here dad. Been real helpful. Lol I'm thinking head off job. Quote
Wayne G Posted December 6, 2012 Posted December 6, 2012 been done many times before along the lines of: 1. remove the bad plug, acquire the heli-coil kit that includes the correct thread parts, tap the head correctly with the tap coated in grease to catch 99% or more swarf, install the coil and snap the tang off by grabbing with long nose pliers and pulling up; 2. try and correct the existing thread with a tap/thread chaser and grease to catch the swarf; 3. pay a mobile thread repair to come and do it for you. Removing the head to repair the thread would be an extreme measure. Good luck Quote
Whoray Posted December 6, 2012 Author Posted December 6, 2012 Thanks guys. Might try the rag and greased tap. Quote
PZG302 Posted December 6, 2012 Posted December 6, 2012 I would take it to Peter Mac to fix. Give him some folding, wait a few weeks and the spark plug problem will be fixed as will having to drive behind a black car on the track....... Might need to find a discrete dry cleaner though, only your dry cleaner and yoourself should know the true colour of adrenalin, and from whence it comes. Quote
