grimlynsan Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 Hello fellow Zedthusiasts! I now have (thanks Greg!) an L28 sitting on the engine stand at my mechanics. My mechanic is very eager to start ordering bits and pieces to make it go fast. I've told him to not order anything just yet, as I'm sure the zed community collectively has enough parts to build half the engine anyway. And I'm sure you'd all rather see the bits in a working Zed than on your shelf gathering more dust right? So, what am I trying to build and what do I need? I am wanting to build up an L29 with lots of low down and mid range power for the street. Major investment will be on head work. What do I have so far? I have: [*]An L28 (N42 I believe) [*]Triple Webers (40mm) and manifold [*]All the transferrable bits from my L26 (CDI ignition etc) So what do I need? As you can probably tell, I'm not a mechanic. I've done a lot of reading on forums (this has confused me a lot!) but honestly don't know the best path forwards. What I'm looking for is a bargain! Building this engine is going to cost me a lot of money, so if I can save some of it by purchasing some pistons or other engine bits from fellow forum members it means I have more money left over for porting, polishing etc. So, if you think you have some engine bits that would be useful for someone building up an L29 as described above, please don't be shy, tell me what you've got and I'll ask my mechanic if I need one! Apologies for my lack of technical/mechanical knowledge - any help or suggestions appreciated! Best, Lee Quote
Scoota G Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 There's some pistons and rings for sale in this thread. http://www.viczcar.com/forum/index.php/topic,11520.0.html Quote

I did see this thread before posting but (forgive me I'm a n00b) I don't think I'll be wanting the standard ones if I'm building a 2.9... Would they be suitable for my purposes? Quote
Scoota G Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 Depends on the condition of your block if you're going oversize pistons. A sonic test will tell how far you can bore it out safely. Quote
PZG302 Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 If you are getting serious about your build, in terms of going a big overbore(2-3mm) and getting new pistons, I have a set of 133mm rods available. They are usually used in strokers, but with a standard crank and custom pistons, will work quite well and give a better stroke/rod ratio which comes into benifet as the bore size goes up. You will need to get good quality rod bolts to suit, but they are here if you are interested. Quote

Not sure of the condition yet as only received it this morning but I assume we'd want to use oversized pistons. I'll ask him to measure what we have now as an indication as to how much more is left! I'll tell him about the 133mm rods and ask him if they'll work with his plans! Anyone else have any go-fast goodies in the shed? Quote
C.A.R. Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 So you're going to build a performance L6 while being a tightarse? Pardon me while I... Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted July 31, 2012 Moderators Posted July 31, 2012 My build was cheap at around the $6000 mark...with few mods. To me, the words "Performance and bargain" can't be used in the same sentence. Hope your mechanic knows his shyte.. Quote

Hope your mechanic knows his shyte.. Funnily enough, when I pressed him to 'ballpark it' he said about that much. He is doing it in his spare time so I'm getting the labour component a bit cheaper (Thanks Marty!) RE: 'performance and bargain' Yeah I know, I've lurked here and on Hybridz for long enough (8 years of Zedication!) to know it can't be cheap AND good. BUT I don't want to skimp on quality - you're reading me all wrong. I just figure that some of you lads have some quality pieces lying about on the shelf... If I can pick some pieces up off you guys I'll maybe save a few bob and help you guys out a bit too. I've certainly gained a lot from access to this site and all your collective wisdom over the years, so if the major contributors have some parts lying about, I'm happy to swing them a few bob! ) So, Lurch (whose posts I have enjoyed over the course of my research by the way - weird to get to know someone by reading their posts!) I'm not REALLY being a tightarse (well, maybe a little), I'm reaching out to those with not enough shed-space, not enough money, or too loud a wife!!! C'mon boys, what have you got lying around?
