Hi,

The thermostat in my stock 240Z (L24 original radiator etc) is stamped as 82C/180F. Is anyone able to confirm if this is the correct operating temp for a 240Z. The car is taking a long time to warm up and in this cold weather the temp gauge stays at the bottom end of the range all the time, which means the heater is not very effective as well.

When I park the car for half an hour or so and come back it requires a decent warm up again. I have removed the thermostat and it appears to operate properly when tested in boiling water. I haven't checked the exact opening temp although it was closed when I took it out.

I would be very interested to know what temp thermostats others are using.

Thanks

Regards

Peter

I just changed the thermostat in my Conformodore, as it was doing the same thing; I'd have to drive for around 10km, and on a freeway, before it would start to move. Replaced it with a genuine tstat, and now within 4 minutes of driving the needle moves quick to operating temp. I think your thermostat opens too early overcooling the water. It should stay almost shut until it reaches the 82' temp. I avoid the Tridon one's as I had a new one fail straight from the packet and it almost melted my 84 Bluebird.

Thanks for the info,

I ended up installing a new 82C/180F thermostat (that is what the book at the parts supplier said) and the improvement was immediate. Drove around 100 miles this afternoon, gauge quickly went up to just under half way and stayed there. Heater is now working well which will help when I drive to work early in the morning. I think the car is now running more efficiently as well, I noticed now the idle was a touch too high and there was more pre ignition which I will sort out tommorow.

I have an 87 degree thermostat in my Z.

This was recommended by PMC

roger on that is bang on , you need to remind yourself where the energy that rotates the back wheels comes from ? i think it could be heat,no definately is heat more heat you produce more power to a certain point that is before a melt down is created

Hi Pauly,

I got the thermostat and gasket from Bernies in High Street Wodonga. It is amazing what he has in that little shop. From memory I think it was a Tridon brand. I know some say Tridon is no good but it is a whole heap better than the faulty one that was in there previously.

I probably would have tried the 87C thermostat but unfortunately I had already fitted the 82C one by the time I saw the reply.

May change it later if it is that worthwhile.
