luvemfast Posted April 17, 2012 Posted April 17, 2012 Has anyone got any experience with these? Made by MSD, but clearly a cheaper division. http://www.street-fire.com/cdiignition.html http://www.street-fire.com/pdf/5520.pdf Pro's Half the price of the MSD 6AL-2 ($145 delivered vs $290) Has a rev limiter Con's Less volts (435V vs 535V) Is it Digital? (Does it matter?) Any other pro's & con's? Quote
dat2kman Posted April 17, 2012 Posted April 17, 2012 $290 for a 6AL2? Ebay sellers claim "genuine" but may be chinese knock off Usual price is around $400 plus from proper MSD wholesalers Do a comparison on the two units, ie specs, the basic CDI could be worth a go, similar to plenty others avail Quote
neRok Posted April 17, 2012 Posted April 17, 2012 I put a streetfire HEI dizzy in the chev v8 that was in my overlander. worked good. My research when I got the dizzy indicated that streetfire products are designed by MSD, but made in china, whereas actual MSD products are made in USA (probably same design, just different manufacture). If it has warranty, cant hurt to try, and definitely a better option than something like procomp. Quote

Lets not kid ourselves, a good Chinese made product can be better than a poor USA made unit. Quote
d3c0y Posted April 18, 2012 Posted April 18, 2012 Just get a second hand MSD? You can get one for like $100 if you get one from the states. I paid $100 for my Crane CDI with rev limit and a high output coil, because dont forget you ahve to run a coil that is up to it too! Quote
DatPilot Posted April 18, 2012 Posted April 18, 2012 Are these the ones that you can advance or retard dependant on manifold pressure or is it RPM? Quote

They actually dont come up too often :-\ Are these the ones that you can advance or retard dependant on manifold pressure or is it RPM? No Quote
d3c0y Posted April 18, 2012 Posted April 18, 2012 Right... next you are going to tell me the internet has run out of porn too i suppose?? http://www.ebay.com/sch/Parts-Accessories-/6028/i.html?_nkw=MSD&_catref=1&_trksid=p3286.c0.m1538&_vxp=mtr Quote

But not 6AL-2, only 6a or 6al. Not digital! They're much the same as a new street fire unit. Quote
Riceburner Posted April 18, 2012 Posted April 18, 2012 I've run the 6AL-2 for sometime now and found it to be great, for me the launch control function is useless. I have read analogue units are supposed to be loud and emit more emf. You'll also need different plug leads too Quote
d3c0y Posted April 18, 2012 Posted April 18, 2012 OK call me daft, but i just read the MSD site and: They all put out 530v and 135mJ (6AL-2 does 535v which i think is a bit of marketing) They are all controlled by a microprocessor (there's your "digital") They draw the same current So the main thing is that the 6AL-2 has two rev limiters and comes in a different box. To be honnest i doubt you could pick the difference between an AL-2 and an AL. Even the 6A has the same specs! The Street Fire CD, however is down a heap on spark - 435v and 95mJ (i think the mJ rating is more important than the volts - it's the energy of the spark). It's probably running cheaper MOSFET transistors if i had to take a guess which is also the bit that will most likely fail in the unit. So FWIW unless you require staged rev limits for your trans brake, i would probably buy a second hand 6AL and save myself the coin. Quote
neRok Posted April 18, 2012 Posted April 18, 2012 i dont think those volts are the spark volts, they are the volts supplied to the coil. that is why you cant use a normal coil and you cant leave a tacho hooked up to the negative post of the coil. some bargains can be had secondhand. i have picked up from ebay on seperate occasions an ICE 7-amp module and coil and a full blown digital 7-amp msd unit, the likes you would see used on a doorslammer or something. both were cheaper than a new msd-6. luvemfast Posted April 18, 2012 Author Posted April 18, 2012 Found on MSD forum only the street fire line in made in china, except the 5520 box. which is made here in the states. So that backs up your theory about inferior internals Jake I'm after- Multi spark Higher power spark Rev limiter Digital So a 6AL (6425) will do the job. Quote
