260Devil Posted December 20, 2011 Posted December 20, 2011 Thinking of ordering 'ground control coilovers' from this website. http://www.nolimitmotorsport.com/prod/gc6020-01 Has anyone had any experience with this company or this product before? i would love some reassurance before i go ahead with the purchase. Many thanks Quote
dat2kman Posted December 20, 2011 Posted December 20, 2011 Well, they have come up with a very inventive name, at least! How do they compare pricing wise to what else is available? Quote
nizm0zed Posted December 20, 2011 Posted December 20, 2011 How much once you add on freight? Its in US$ yea? Consider the HSD ones from Otomoto. Either way, you'll need to weld the sleeves onto your struts, it may work out easier just to get them locally through Ben. If you have the later struts (you should, with a 260z) you'll need the 55mm tubes, so it'll pay to check and see what spring rates you can get with each kit. I have no idea what is 'ideal' but some of the other blokes on here are very knowledgeable on that matter. Quote
sco_aus Posted December 20, 2011 Posted December 20, 2011 I have them all round. Considering the machining, labour, etc involved, it would probably be similar in price to just buy the Arizona Zed Car ones. Unless of course, you are handy or know someone who is handy with that sort of thing. I wish they made that stuff when I did mine... The problem is, they are just a sleeve with a spring perch. Thats the easy bit, there is a lot of work involved making them actually fit. Quote
Roberto Posted March 1, 2013 Posted March 1, 2013 you'll need to weld the sleeves onto your struts Can anyone confirm if this is actually true? I am thinking that the new coilover spring perch gets welded onto the strut tube and the threaded sleeve slides over and simply rests on the new perch. Does the threaded sleeve need welding aswell?? Quote
Retro Z Posted March 1, 2013 Posted March 1, 2013 Roberto. According to the recent email i got from Techno toy you are correct. You just weld on the ring and it rests on it. The spring pressure holds it down against the perch. They said you can put in one grub screw to help lock it in if you like but not necessary. The sleeve is aluminium so dont think it can be welded directly onto strut. Quote
nizm0zed Posted March 1, 2013 Posted March 1, 2013 The HSD sleeves are steel, they need to be welded on. But if they are alloy sleeves, then no, you weld on the perch and the sleeve simply sits in place. Quote
Roberto Posted March 1, 2013 Posted March 1, 2013 Alternatively, if you can get springs that don't need to have the original perch removed you can save a lot of hassle. http://datsunpartsllc.com/cart/index.php?p=product&id=194&parent=34 They are not coilovers. How do you adjust the height? Quote
Retro Z Posted March 1, 2013 Posted March 1, 2013 Alternatively, if you can get springs that don't need to have the original perch removed you can save a lot of hassle. http://datsunpartsllc.com/cart/index.php?p=product&id=194&parent=34 Those are just springs. Robertos Ground controls are Coilover sleeves and are height adjustable .The perch needs to be removed so the struts can be sectioned to allow lower ride height without bottoming out. Quote
Retro Z Posted March 2, 2013 Posted March 2, 2013 He has already bought the coilovers. Its not really that big of a deal. Several people on this forum will do the job of sectioning, welding etc for $200-$300 if its too much of a hassle. Roberto hasn't mentioned what he wants in terms of adjustability, height etc.. So without speculating lets just leave it at that. Each to their own i guess. Quote
Roberto Posted March 2, 2013 Posted March 2, 2013 I am not going to give a sales pitch on coilovers. Many have them, many don't. Are they necessary? No. Neither are lowered springs or 99% of everything we do to our zeds. I already have sectioned struts so bottoming out is no longer an issue. Adding these is as simple as grinding off the original spring perch and welding the new perch on. I wanted them so that I could have control of total ride height (plus left to right and rear to front) . I couldn't get the car to sit exactly as I wanted it. The other bonus is you select your spring rates! Quote
