Stivva Posted October 14, 2011 Posted October 14, 2011 I bought a set of factory leather black seats for my 260z a little while back and after a good clean and condition with some fantastic Autoglym Leather cleaner and Autoglym leather cream, they were nice and soft and doing the right job at parking my butt firmly in the car. But there was something about them I really hated! After one drive, my clothes would have taken off the deep sheen of the cleaner and the seats were no longer pitch black, more the faded old leather black that they had become. The drivers seat also had a bad wear mark where the colour had come off altogether. So I decided to pay a little visit to Mister Mint (in most shopping centres) and get a touch up leather dye for the wear mark. This little bottle cost my $9.95 and it looked like enough to cover that wear mark up and I would be happy. So I give my little wear mark a few coats and life was good.... but then I got dye happy and decided that little white mark on the base of my passenger seat needed touching up too. So gave that a little lick of dye and then it happened! The dye was too black! It no longer matched up to the rest of the seat!!!! I then decided that if I did that panel from seem to seem it may look better. One panel down and it did look better, but I had so much dye let in that little bottle. I thought I may as well keep going! Within 10 minutes I had the whole base of the passenger seat re-dyed and still had half a bottle of dye left!!!!!! I have calculated that 3 bottles of this dye can have the faces of your seats re-dyed and looking brand new! Excuse me so I can head back to Mister Mint for another two bottles!!! NOTES: I have use one coat per section just to revive colour, and not to cover wear marks. If your seats are more worn, you may require another bottle. The photos above are taken when the dye was still wet, and thats why they are still super glossy. If you do not want to brush this on yourself, you can hire someone to re-dye your seats professionally for about $100 per seat. Quote
RB30X Posted October 14, 2011 Posted October 14, 2011 What about when I wear my white john travolta dancing pants on Saturday nights. Will it rub off on them. Quote
Stivva Posted October 14, 2011 Author Posted October 14, 2011 The answer to that is no. This is a proper leather dye, not a polish. It soaks into the pores of the seat and dries. Once it cures it will be like the original dyed finish of the seat. Just give the seat a clean and condition to take off any excess before you don then cricket whites (or travolta whites). Quote
260Coupe Posted October 14, 2011 Posted October 14, 2011 Brilliant ! On another subject..................I think your handbrake needs some adjustment Quote
sexual_sushi Posted October 14, 2011 Posted October 14, 2011 That's not a handbrake, it's the funky securing device of his bench seat Quote
Stivva Posted October 14, 2011 Author Posted October 14, 2011 The cable is stretched and the Jaxx couldnt fit me in until Monday. I asked this morning. But I digress, let's keep on subject Quote
RB30X Posted October 24, 2011 Posted October 24, 2011 Hey Stiva, hows your seats going? Have you sat in them much yet? I was wondering if this stuff would work on my autotechnica sports seats. It does say 'most synthetics' on the bottle. The polycotton/polyester or what ever my seat covering is made of has faded from the sun in some sections and if this stuff would 'dye' it back to black then I'll give it a go. Cheers Tim Quote
Stivva Posted December 14, 2011 Author Posted December 14, 2011 Mine have yet to fade and I drive my car all the time. The only thing I would do if doing it again is use a bigger brush to make the process faster. But on synthetics you can use VHT vinyl dye, as this works very very well and is a spray. I have done an entire cars interior with this with no problems in the past. Quote
Mr Camouflage Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 I bought a set of factory leather black seats for my 260z a little while back but the factory seats are vinyl (plastic) not leather right? Quote
Stivva Posted December 15, 2011 Author Posted December 15, 2011 Mine are leather, may have been recovered? Quote
zeds4ever Posted January 19, 2012 Posted January 19, 2012 That's correct Steve they are genuine leather,I originally had them in a 2+2 some years back. They look great mate. Hows the motor coming along. Regards: Alan. Quote
Mr260z Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 I know it's an old post, but how are the seats going. I've got brown leather seats in my Zed but really want them black. I was considering using the VHT spray which worked great on my vinyl back seat but I'm not sure how it will take to leather. Can this Dye be used to change colour also ? Quote
