Snapped manifold stud

Hey guys, while tightening my manifold bolts/studs I managed to snap one on the no.5 inlet/exhaust. It has broken flush with the head 

 

What's the best way to get it out, I'd like to avoid removing the manifolds if possible....?

 

Also where can I get new ones, I've tried all the auto stores and they have longer ones which didn't seem suitable

I could cut you a length of 8mm threaded rod or what ever size they are but I cant help you with the extractors, try ebay.

I have a set of easyouts? (I think they're called that) you drill a hole and then these screw in in reverse and allow you to extract the broken stud.

You can borrow them if you wish.

I have some spare studs Gareth...with the broken stud, I do have some Re-coil equipment that helps to drill the center of the broken stud for an EZ out but manifolds have to be removed..

I do have ez outs but haven't used them before, any tips? If I have to remove the manifolds I will but I'd like to do the least amount of work possible. Hehe

Hardest part is to try and drill a good sized hole right in the middle of the broken stud; maybe a 4-5mm drill? Then the EZ out can be tightened in (left hand thread!) and hopefully with the broken stud on the end of it. Use a centre punch to help with the start of the drilling. Come around when you can and I'll give you a stud..

Started the repair this arvo, had to pull off carbs and rear inlet manifold unfortunately. After 25mins I had that pesky stud out, it was actually broken two threads below the face of the head! Woohoo 

 

Thanks to Dimitri for the spare stud and I'll do the re-assembly tomorrow.

Next time have a bit of sympathy for that poor little 1/4" drive ratchet, its not like youre a little guy who needs to prove hwo the boss is!!!!

I find the best places to get new studs is from exhaust shops.

They generally carry most sizes and types of threads, or can get them no probs.

My last snappage was in my old car, snapped a rocker cover bolt in the head.

Tried drilling it with a tungsten carbide (i think) drill bit, ended up drilling fine but my P.O.S. drill is off balance and then snapped the drill bit in the bolt....

I gave up. Thought it was cheaper to get a new head than to get the bolt repair dude out ($200 to fix)

We carry most studs on shelf pretty sure most exhaust shops would Broken studs are the biggest problem when changing manifolds

The exhaust shop secret to getting them out is to weld the end of stud once u have a dab of weld on it weld  a nut to stud. The heat helps crack the stud loose as well Then undo stud

Odds are it will take few goes but easier than drilling And works on V6 engines where no hope of drilling

Went to a few exhaust shops and they all stocked the same style I had found previously, they're 5mm shorter on the section that goes in the head. I got them and fitted it all up without any dramas. Thanks guys.
