odd problem...starting

Well......I am getting a bit sick of this one....

 

'71 240Z, upgraded Maxima Alternator.

 

When starting after maybe 1 day of not being driven (occassionally immediately after, but not often).....

If it does not fire on first turn over, and you stop and turn they key again....it starts making the clicking flat battery noise.....

Initially diagnosed as a fried starter motor (and the one we took off was REALLY fried..) the problem is still hanging round.

 

Battery is about 5 years old, I think it may be the next to go BUT if you leave it and come back, it can start as if there was no problem.

 

Any suggestions?

have you verified the alt is charging, done a load test on the battery?, I would be betting its the battery if the battery is less than 12.5v probably a dead cell

What he said.  At 5 years old, the battery is pretty likely to be rooted - they just don't seem to last anymore.  Tried jump starting it when its making the clicking noise?

 

Could also be fusible links or bad connections on battery or other terminals though....

Place a multimeter across the battery while the starter motor is working and it should be above 10V. Any lower, and I'd replace the battery. Batteries that are failing, behave in weird ways. And yeah, if the battery voltage is anywhere below 12.5V with noting on/running, replace the battery or check the charging system. While the car is running, expect around 13.4-14.4V.

Well I have now replaced the battery......hopefully that helps.

I am currently out of town so a multimeter seemed like a lot of effort....

 

Hopefully that does it.
