neRok Posted March 19, 2011 Posted March 19, 2011 hi, i purchased my zed not running and it had a big 4wd battery in it. it was knackered so i ditched it and put one from my commodore in, a more normal size. there didnt seem to be any holes on the outside of the battery tray, so i just hooked the battery clamps around the metal. i was using the tent peg style clamps. took car for its first drive today, as i have pulled up the driveway the battery has slid off the tray and onto the exhaust. lucky i popped the bonnet as soon as i pulled up, just to see how the engine was looking, and prevented a bit of a mess. but now i need to work out a proper clamp. ive notcied on the firewall side of the battery tray, there is a tab with a hole for a clamp, but its 'inside' the tray. is this the normal fasten point, because if so i will need a really skinny battery. the commodore battery is ~17cm wide, i might need to get a small car battery that is ~13cm. but there is nothing at the front that i can see. anyone got some advice or even some photos? if it gets too hard i might just stick it in the boot. gilltech Posted March 19, 2011 Posted March 19, 2011 The Zeds have a light metal frame, made from a small steel angle that sits on the top edges of the battery, around all 4 sides, that clamps the battery down, using a bolt through the firewall on one side & a conventional threaded rod on the other as hold-downs. I haven't got a picture to hand, but take a look at a parts catalog, say, Z Parts . com Motorsport Auto. So it's a frame, not a bar across the middle of the battery like a Mustang or Falcon for example. Quote
xa1973 Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 Any Auto parts store even Kmart carry battery hold down clamp assemblys. measure your battery cradle for correct size battery including height and go from there, or you can custom make your own using alloy flat bar and booker rod Quote
PZG302 Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 I use the same size battery as in my Falcon ute and a cheap battery clamp. One leg into the hole in the firewall and the other hooks under the battery tray opposite. I then trim the legs to suit with a hacksaw and the battery doesn't move at all. Quote
neRok Posted March 20, 2011 Author Posted March 20, 2011 bugger, seems i have been jipped. i have no drilled holes in the firewall, just a bit of rust and there is no mounts anywhere near by, on the inside of fender etc. thanks for the tip of the angle frame, hadnt considered that one. think i might just cut my battery tray out to fix the rust and move battery to boot. seems easiest. zeds4ever Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 There is a post on rear battery installation already in existence in this section methinks. Regards: Alan. Quote
