bullzed Posted November 9, 2010 Posted November 9, 2010 Hey Everyone, I was wondering if anyone has had experience with the OBX Helical LSD for the R200. I've done a bit of research and have found that of course they will fit, but I'm wondering whether they're a straight bolt in LSD or whether I'm going to need any other after-market paraphernalia to get it to fit properly. I have also heard that they have (in some cases) been put together in the wrong fashion, whereby the force through acceleration has caused wear and tear on the washers. Supposedly reversing the gears within the OBX can change this? Can anyone confirm this? Picture attached. I'm quite new to all of this so apologies for any newb-ness. Thanks Zac Quote
NZeder Posted November 9, 2010 Posted November 9, 2010 lol the pic of the "Right" setup is my OBX centre. I can't tell you how it goes as it is still sitting on the floor of my garage. Shows how long my project has been going I was one of the first guys on Hybridz to take the plunge and get an OBX centre - had it installed in my 4.11 and it has sat waiting for me to put the car together. And now I might use one of my Baltec centres anyway Quote
bullzed Posted November 9, 2010 Author Posted November 9, 2010 Any chance you'd sell that OBX set up? If not, would it be possible for you to quickly run through what you did to get it all to fit properly? Quote
RB30X Posted November 9, 2010 Posted November 9, 2010 It's looks like it should come already assembled in the new housing. I don't think it would be that hard. Monster LSD though. No slipping from that **stard. Quote
bullzed Posted November 10, 2010 Author Posted November 10, 2010 If I buy it from eBay from the states it's only the centre. I've heard that spacers and shims etc don't match perfectly. Quote
NZeder Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 I got mine from ebay years ago, as getting the backlash setup is something I did not want to do I took the centre and my open 4.11 do a diff specialist. I did this after I took the diff centre apart (that is when I took those pics I posted on hybridz) I replaced the bevelle washes in the centre, replaced the bolts and installed the snap-rings for the axles. Re-assembled and as stated had the diff guy install with my new bearings I also purchase. The diff guy made up the spacer for the installation. If/when I sell the obx it will be just the centre or I might setup in a 3.9 and sell locally here in NZ as the shipping of a complete long nose R200 would not be cheap. Quote
bullzed Posted November 10, 2010 Author Posted November 10, 2010 Oh wow. It sounds all quite expensive and complicated. I would have no idea about backlash and spacers and would have to have it all professionally done. Quote
NZeder Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 Well it cost me (if I recall) about $120 for the work to fit including the spacers. I supplied the diff, obx centre and new bearings/seals Quote
bullzed Posted November 10, 2010 Author Posted November 10, 2010 That's not nearly as much as I thought it would cost. Do you think this is the cheapest option for LSD? Quote
marc280 Posted March 5, 2011 Posted March 5, 2011 I have also bought one of these centre and installed it in my 280zx. I took the centre apart and found that it was installed the 'wrong' way from OBX. I installed new bolts and belleville washers as the ones from OBX don't lookt to be very good. I then had a diff shop actually fit the centre into the housing as I didn't really want to screw this up and then have to remove the diff again... So far I've only taken the car for a short drive as I'm still finishing of my 1uz engine conversion, so I can't really so how well it does/doesn't work yet, but from what other people have been saying about centre it works very well.
