OZ001 Posted November 7, 2010 Posted November 7, 2010 this weekend i manage to do an upgrade on some s13 hubs which will be bolted on to my 280zx, but this upgrade will do just fine for others wanting to upgrade their brakes. Note: Do this at your own risk Ingredients: - Hack Saw or Angle Grinder (or both) - Screw Driver or Thin head chisel - Bearing Grease - Breaker Bar - i used a 30mm socket (29mm wouldve been a better fit but still works) - Hammer - Pin locks or you can use the original hub from the hubs itself - R33 GTST Brake Calipers - R33 GTST Brake Rotors (mine have redrilled to 4x114.3) - S13 Front Left and Right hubs and knuckles - A friend - Patience - Swear jar - Some bandaids 1. Here you have the Hub & Knuckle assembly. Looks like an easy job? sorta... 2. Because the Knuckles weren't on the car a section of the backing plate needed to be cut off so the knuckle can be place flat on the ground (couldn't find a vice so manual labour all the way). You can either use an angle grinder or a hack saw to do this. The section you need to cut is about half of the backing plate, make sure you cut the bottom half off not the top half where u attach the coilovers/suspension. 3. After cutting you need to remove the Hub Cap, with a small screw driver or a chisel wedge it on the edge of the hub cap and hub then carefully tap your way around the cap until it comes out. Once it has popped out you will see the pin and the nut securing the hub. 4. Remove the pin. Now for the nut, you will need a friend to undo the nut while you hold the knuckle down or vice versa. In step 2 the reason for cutting the plate is that it'll just roll around if it stays on and can cause injury. 5. Remove the Hub assembly, it'll just pull right off if it doesn't you can always use that hammer and tap gently off. Note: i took out the bearing to grease it back up because i bought this from the wreckers the condition was unknown. With the Bearing Grease lube up the the ball bearings and the surroundings, then stick it back together. 6. With the Hub still off get your hammer and knock off the backing plate it'll just fall right off. 7. Reattach the Hub to the Knuckle the same way it came off, you cant really mess this up. Screw in that massive nut and insert pin. then u can slap back on the Hub Cap Pic with out the hub cap 8. With the R33 Rotors been re-drilled from 5x114.3 to 4x114.3 they sit nicely on the hub, the R33 Calipers it'll bolt straight on without any dramas. 9. Your swear jar would be full by now because the nut was a pain in the ass to remove. Thats all for now now until i get the S13 coilovers, to be bolted on the 280zx. overall pretty simple, with simple tools. I might've miss some things but if u need anything i will be able answer some questions. Quote
luvemfast Posted November 8, 2010 Posted November 8, 2010 But how are you going to fit that to your 280 strut? Quote
OZ001 Posted November 8, 2010 Author Posted November 8, 2010 But how are you going to fit that to your 280 strut? S13 Base height adjustable coilovers, the fronts bolt straight on, the rear needs another hole drilled to fit. Mick has done the conversion but only difference is he used 300zx TT calipers. I won't be getting the coilovers till I get back from the army in 2 weeks Quote
NZeder Posted November 8, 2010 Posted November 8, 2010 so how is the steering geo/ackerman, camber, caster vs the stock setup?? Quote
OZ001 Posted November 9, 2010 Author Posted November 9, 2010 so how is the steering geo/ackerman, camber, caster vs the stock setup?? Well the coilovers will have the adjustable camber tops, so I will need to set that up somehow. With the standard s13 suspension, I've been told that it'll sit 1" off the ground which is not vert practical or legal, even if the it was a set of standard coilovers. I won't know the steering geo until the work is done and I can tell u from there. I believe the caster would be negative Quote
ovenfood Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 hey i did this a while ago as well, great minds think alike :> i found that even on max negative camber on the camber tops that it still had positive camber. i couldn't find any LCA's that were the 2" longer i needed so i slotted the top hole on the coilovers where the knuckle connects to them. also you have to change the sway bars position a tad Quote
