Now i have been reading through countless threads on this topic and from what I gather this shouldn"t be too hard.

All i want to know is exactly what part or parts do I need. I Have a DR30 skyline 3.9 LSD which was good with my L6 but not so good with the 308 V8. I really need to go to 3.5. I'm thinking I can use whatever the part is called out of the 260z auto. Is it  just the one gear whatever part I need to change my ratio?

I have researched but all the diff parts and so forth are a bit bewildering. Excuse my ignorance.

            Cheers Ricky

Hey Ricky

You need to change the crown wheel (The big gear that bolts to the LSD center) and the pinion (the input gear at the front of the diff that drives the crown wheel). They come in matched pairs from what I understand. You would need to take it to a transmission place and have them set up the preload and/or backlash, or whatever its called.

Open diff is fine.

But I think you'll find that the ones found in the 260Z/280ZX will be 3.70:1 rather than 3.54:1.

(I ran a 3.54:1 R180 open in my MR30 turbo for a few years and it had really long legs!)

So firstly I'd better open up the diff and see what size bolt, 10 or 12mm. I've read that at about 1984 the DR30 R200 LSD changed sizes and I have no idea what year it's from. Can anyone confirm that the 260z didn't have 3.5 something gear ratio. Currently at 100 kph I'm reving at 3200 rpm. What do you reckon the 3.7 would bring it down to, keeping in mind that I currently have 3.94?

A 3.7 diff would be doing 100kph at just under 3000rpm. 3.5 ratio would be a bit lower again. A 3.5 for the V8 should be ok. All auto 260Z's had the 3.5 diffs. The 3.7 was standard in the manual 260Z's. 240Z had a R180 3.9 diff but with different ratio's in the gearbox.

Simon unfortunately we're about 4000k's apart, I'm in the west. What did you have in mind anyway. Stewart wilkinson ms was keen to do some sought of swap. Tomorrow I'll talk to a diff specialist and find out associated costs. Has anyone had this work performed and if so what price was attached to it roughly?

Hi Webberd six,

I'm in the west and I have a 3.54 Viscous LSD for sale. Give me a pm and we can chat some more. I've only done about 1500km in it since a full rebuild.

It's got a silvia LSD centre and I've had stub axlws made up that have the proper splines for the diff and mounting plates for the standard zed axles.

Thanks to all who gave me the necessary info, much appreciated and now I'm a little more knowledgable on the crown & pinion stuff. I pulled my diff tonight saving myself $180 and tomorrow I pick up the 3.54 260z open diff with stub flanges, you know those little shaft things that go into the diff and attach to the half shafts. I'll end up selling my 3.94 crown & pinion which will in turn will almost pay for the diff. Again thanks Ricky
