Good luck this weekend fella's, it will be real interesting between Siddens and Dan's Dad!! Jason's times in the 120Y will be interesting as well. Betcha Jason's car gets more lookers than the White's Lambo does....

Yeh good luck and a safe journey for all the Datsun runners, will be following the results and wondering if this is going to be Jon Siddins Z targa year.

Not much joy for the Z cars, I'm sure they were well driven but at the end of the day its power, brakes, wheel size...............

That old chestnut again 260DET, I dont know the full story, but did you have a look at the results!! there's an RX-3, Rx-7 and a Jenson Healy above them in outright!! so no tyre, brake or power advantage there (well OK the Healy is 7 litres but it has to put it through a 225 tyre and was built in 1963!), I'm 90% sure the winning Capri can only use 8 inch rims as well. Mate the top 5 cars cost well over a $100,000 each to build, a competive classic spec Porker is around $150-200 grand to build , Lenny's Mustang was well over $300,000!! and let's face it, the 'German Monsters' were better Homologated by smarter engineers and have been competitive in rallying from the year dot, where abouts the Zed's were only competitve once a year at the Safari, were toughness not speed won the event. It is well documented that Datsun never did any real devolpment on the Zed as a rally car where abouts the 'Euro' car companies were flat out developing their cars, thus giving the 'Classic' rally car builder a lot more options as far as car spec to work with when building one today.  Anyway Siddens proved at Targa Tas this year just how fast a well driven, well built Zed goes....

ZZZZZZZZZ....yep I bite again, just like a well hooked fish, LOL

Yes I agree with your sums Blurat. To be at the pointy end you really need to spend 100k+ and don't be surprised if some of the lessor cars like the EX3 or 7 haven't had similar amounts spent on them.  But as long as you had fun that's the main thing. Cheers

Yeh the money certainly helps but you can only spend so much on a Zed, knowing Sidden's car there is not much more that can be done there within the rules.

Actually there were heaps of parts developed and sold by Nissan for the S30 to make it competitive in any form of motorsport but unfortunately due to a couple of factors they are not allowed to be used. For example in the US market legislation required cars to be sold in a standard form and all S30's sold there were standard models which could not be sold new with motorsport parts fitted. And of course in Japan who knows what was fitted to what?

A couple of us checked this out very thoroughly, basically Japan and the US mostly went their own way with the motorsport parts bin method while the Euro's homologated particular parts for particular forms of motorsport in Europe. What the Japs did with their rally S30's I do not know but lightweight body panels etc were partof the spec. In AU we are stuck with the Euro way of defining whats allowable, its not hard to work out why.

Hey guys just a little report it was a good event for rob on the satday we where sitting 5th in classic and john was 3rd so it was building to be a good fight on sunday but not to be for rob it all ended 2km from the end of the jamieson stage where we had a lhr brake line pop on rob he then still had to transport 28km down the next stage before i could get to him and replace the brake line and bleed all the brakes he lost about 5 mins which ended his event but we still got to end of the event with a straight car which was good john siddins had a big spin on the skyline stage befor lunch which put a big dint in the back of his zeds fuel tank and he lost about 2 mins with that issue but we both finished which was good to see its hard for the zeds to keep up with the front guys the zeds just lack in the hp department and tyre size as well

cheers daniel devenish

will try and bring dads car up to the christmas party at gordons

Yeah bring the car along to the BBQ. I am sure everyone would love to see it and even hear the story of the Buller weekend.

There is probably a bit more power available compared with what your average targa Z engine puts out, hard to tell because those sorts of things are not usually revealed. So a bit more power is likely to be just $, wheel rim size is a tough one particularly when you look at eg what the Porkers are allowed to run and the limitation on the number of tyres that can be used.

Anyway, congrats to Ron and Jon for having a good go, can't do more than that.

Congrat's to Ron and Jon on thie efforts. There is always next year!

Regarding the Porsche's the biggest disadvantage the Z's have for tarmac rallies is the tyre size with the Pork's already a min'm 1.5 inches wider on std (depending on year and model even more) and with only an additional 2 inches on standard allowed the Z's just can't match on grip levels. Nonetheless, the fact that a good well driven Z can keep in touch with the front runners just goes to show how good  the Z is.

I'm just finishing my 2.5 yr full rebuld and I only just missed out on being ready for this year's event. I plan to be running in next year's event ..........

bit late here but farrgitt, I had an absolute ball, had a few "Ooohhh Oohhh Oooohhh" momnets on the downhill runs with a bit of late breaking and understeer onto the gravel edges on the outside of a couple of corners, that was enuff, so backed off a bit.

My class, I was the ONLY one, so I won my class, big deal it was DEMO, which meant not elegible, but apparently my entry money was elegible!!

On our way down called into  George Fury's  ( Mr God to all Nissan folk!) farm for 3 hours, he was ecstatic to see it again, and dropped by at DMS Suspension Jamie Drummond, he was very pleased with the work done to bring it back to it's "as rallied" spec in 1986. He has even given me a whole new set of suspension for it, updated to 2010 specs!

At each stop on the event I had many people come up and ask about it, It is in next edition of Unique Cars mag, it made the Wangaratta Chroniclem the Albury Wodonga Border MAil, and the online Rallysport newsletter/mag.

Funniset thing was on first stage through Mansfiled our comms failed, and there was noy bloody way i could hear Dave ( nav) giving me the calls, it was a case of three fingers two fingers one finger and either point left or point righ and hammer the thing through.

Someone came up to us after the Sat run up Buller and said, "Now we know what 9000 rpm in a FJ24 sounds like, thank you kindly!!"

Car still has rally/dirt spec suspension so pleas all excuse the impressive body roll, and no the back axle is not parting company, it is just the articulation of the six link rear end arms
